Hi,

I have recently purchased a 1991 V8i petrol Discovery with manual transmission.

I live in a hilly area and am having a little trouble taking off smoothly when doing hill starts. This is just normal road driving, not off road. Even when just on the flat, if I let out the clutch slowly until I can feel it wanting to pick up, with the revs just idling, when I try to ease off the hand brake I get a real clunk and it jerks forward.

Is there a particular technique I should be using for taking off on hills, or do I just need plenty of practice?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!
 
Something is a little worn down below methinks. Pick up should be smooth.

This could be anything from a worn universal joint:( in the driveline to a clunky gearbox needing some major internal work.:eek:

Time for an expert diagnosis...
 
certainly sounds like UJ or clutch/pressure plate to me. Sorry mate...as widget said...time to take it to the doctors I think.
 
Do Discos have transmission handbrakes? I found it took a while for me to first get used to the hand brake on my SIII which I bought having only ever driven a Fiesta before.

Blippie, just thinking on from that yes it does so if whe engine and clutch are on the biting point then you release the break this surley means that there is slack further down the chain or am I getting this all the wrong way round?
 
If you look under your Landy, you will see the round drum brake just after the transfer box on the rear which goes to the back axle thats the handbrake.

So if your at biting point, I would let the handbrake completly out, these brakes don't take kindly to being used when in motion, NEVER use this brake to stop the car unless in an emergency, at speed pulling the hand brake on will strip the shoes in seconds.

If you still get a clunk then I would check your UJ's, go under and try turning the props with your hands, if there is a lot of play on one or the other (or both) then I would imagine thats the problem.

Maybe your handbrake is a bit seized?!? Does it happen only when using the hand brake.

In reply to discomania: Yes it only happens with the hand brake. Thanks for the advice about not pulling the handbrake on when in motion. I'll try letting the brake off completly at the pickup point as you've suggested when I get the thing back from the garage (ignition switch died!). If it is that sensitive perhaps I should move the clutch to just below the pickup point as I let it off?
 
As with any veichle you will get used to it and work out the best way, try bringing the clutch up, just as you think its going to bite, totaly release the hand brake while continuing to bring the clutch right up and giving it a little throttle.

Hope that solves the horrible crunching noise!
