Hi All,
Hill descent on my 1999 Freelander XEDi doesn't engage. Well, the light on the dash doesn't come on when I engage it. Upon starting the vehicle the lights on the dash illuminate so I know the bulb at the dash works.

What are the likely causes?

Also, the horn doesn't work. I looked under the bonnet and couldn't even find a horn element, (it might not even have one which would solve the problem)! Fact is, there isn't even the symbol for a horn in either fuse box!

Any solutions or avenues to pursue are greatly appreciated folks. Yes, I am looking into getting a Haynes!

As per Freelander Instruction Manual HDC works only if 1 or R is selected not up/down shifting in D position

If you change to any other position then 1 or R green light will flash indicating gear not read for HDC and DHC is disabled

Hope that helps ;)

almost there 1964, instructions you gave indicate D for an auto box.

rules are still the same though, HDC only works in 1st or reverse gear, green HDC light will come on on dash.

if you switch it on in any other gear, or neutral, green HDC light should flash on dashboard.

if you have the manual version, it is quite common for the wire to the switch to fall off and stop it from working.

pop the switch out and check the connections, can be resoldered if necessary, no great shakes.

OK,

If you look in the fuse box located behind the battery in your engine bay, you will find the fuse for the horn. It is fuse number 11 in this pic:

The horn relay is number 18 and the horn its self is number 17 in this pic:

Hope this helps!

Fantastic!

Have only tried engaging HDC in 1st gear. Will check the switch though.

I think I might now have located the horn after looking at the diagram, mega helpful and as I'm off to the scappies later, will get another fuse.

Many many thanks for your replies, I will let you know the outcome of my fault finding!
Regards,
Karl.
