I having posted a previous thread about the highlander 2 rack for the disco 2 and got knowhere (not a dig), I have managed to track down a highlander rack that is for the disco with no roof bars.

mine has them, so I guess the question is, how easy are they to remove?

Is it a headliner out job?

Or last ditch attempt, anyone know of a highlander 2 rack that will fit with the bars, safety devices made both types but have stopped product for a while if not forever.

Hi, this article might help. I'd hoped to get a Highlander rack myself some time ago but, with the Safety Devices problems, ended up with a Patriot. The attached article discusses how to remove the roof bars and, yes, it is a roof lining down job.

I'll pm you, the article size is too large for the forum.

Sorry. not having a good day. Look under the tech section, there's a listing for roof rail removal...

Had a look, hummm could end up me still looking around for a high highland 2.

SD have moved to Holland (I think) and said that they may start production of it again by the end of the year.

Got to weigh it all up, how do you find the patriot rack?

Thanks for all your efforts though reguardless.

Hi
Glad you found the article even it was a bit off-putting.

I quite like the Patriot rack. It is very heavy - probably a bit over engineered - so tends to stay on the car. Being a flat rack, you can easily fit a roof top tent (if you need to) and is very usable. It does, however, sit a fair bit higher than the SD rack. I easily fitted a Howling Moon awning to the side of mine. Quality is excellent - no complaints there.

I think I will have a look around at billing (first time) this year if I dont get sorted out before then.

Nice looking Disco, I'm look to fit an awning as well and if the budget allows, a roof tent.

Do you know if there are good discounts available at the show?

I'll be at Billing to (not the first time...)

Generally speaking, for items like roof racks, there are few (if any) discounts available at the show. You might be able to save a few quid and/or postage but I'd hesitate to say good discounts are available.

You will be able to look at all the racks that are available though and should be able to compare one against another - not necessarily racks fitted to Discoveries however, unless you tour the camping grounds/car parks that is.

If you want to fit a roof top tent at some point then the flat racks are the best. If you got an SD rack, for example, then you'd find that the tent sat on top of the side rails. With a Patriot, you have the option of removing the side rails which is only necessary for a 1.6m wide tent anyway.

Hannibal racks are another contender - you'll certainly see those at Billing - but they are not cheap. Their awning would then easily fit to the side of the rack. It would also go on a Patriot, saying that, but would need spacers (available from the Patriot manufacturers).

My awning (Howling Moon) goes onto the side of the Patriot rack quite easily - Trek Overland market both Howling Moon and Patriot products. They will be at Billing and you'll be able to see the whole set up on their stand.

Do your ground work well. Rack + awning + tent is quite an investment. You don't want to make the wrong decision and regret it later...

Enjoy Billing, it's quite an experience...

Bit cheeky i know but where did you find one? I have been looking for so long to no avail. If you ever wished to sell..........? Hope you find one soon.

question about tonys td5 ,are the wheels 18 " if so what are the make of tyres are they .and where did you get the front bumper from,??????????

Spud450

The wheels are 19" - RR3 Vogue alloys. The tyres are Goodyear MTR. There isn't a suitable mud terrain (that I know available) for 18" wheels although there is now an ATR in the form of AT2, which is a good tyre. When I was looking, a bit ago now, there was nothing available at all and I got a good deal for my 18" wheels against these.

The bumper is TJM. I got it from Overland Expedition Company down in Devon.
