In only eight working hours.

Down to the bare metal with rotary brushes on the end of a drill – carefully.

Stripped down, one portion at a time.

All seals replaced, with all the originals looking okay.

All screws replaced with Allen Heads.

I bought the 2nd hand pump for £60 with free P&P.

I now have a completely refurbished pump ready to go.

It’s now boxed as a spare. I like having spares.
 
Good job. Very therapeutic refurbishing things!!

I like spares too, got 7 Freelanders. 2 are used as spares and test beds for fault diagnosis.
 
Thanks, Andy. My aim, by showing what I did, is to help others to perhaps do the same with confidence. The worst part of the job was removing 8 of the 12 pump's Torx screws. I don't like Torx.
My advice for anyone, is have a hammer & chisel handy as well as Allen screws to replace them. I used the H&C to crack the grip of screws that wouldn't budge.
 
I'd like to refurb a spare hp pump that is on my old TD4 engine with the broken crank. It was replaced about 50k before the engine failure, but I cannot remove the hex cap in the timing cover!! Tried everything. Will have to take cover off. Have a feeling that the garage that changed the pump may have cross threaded it?!

Hi. You need a 17mm allen key, or a bolt with appropriately sized nuts, to fit the Hex cap. An alternative, and it's one I use quite often, is to chisel it round until it can be removed.
I'm sorry I can't be there to help. I'm a dab hand with a chisel. lol I've had lots of practice.

With the old pump on the bench, are there any special tools required to disassemble or is it all standard stuff?
It's basically standard kit you need, which includes Torx.
For inserting rubber & plastic seals I used a narrow bolt to press them into position. The Allen headed bolts used for the regulator are the same as the three needed for the rotor.

You've slightly inspired me. I'm now wondering about getting a turbo from the breakers and doing something similar. New casette etc. In readiness.

And that's something I've got my sights on too. If you do it with the Turbo, cassette, or whatever, I would appreciate you posting it.
I know repair/refurbishment kits are available so I'll do some exploration on the subjects.
