Hi Folks. Sorry for jumping straight in with a question but I don't want to risk damage.

I have a 2006 Freelander TD4 with around 40k on the clock. In the last week I've noticed that as soon as I get above 1800 revs, particularly in 4th and 5th gear, there is a high pitched whining noise from the car. Is this something to do with the turbo? Is it safe to drive? Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated cos I'm kinda technically clueless. Many thanks.

Derek

!800 revs would be about when the turbo kicks in. 40K is low mileage for a 10yr vehicle, but turbo could still be on the way out. I'd post in the Freelander section.

Thanks AL203 and hd3. I will re-post where you guys have suggested. I'm struggling to pinpoint where it is coming from but it does seem to be pretty close to the bulkhead. I can't hear it with the windows opened. Sorry if that seems like a comment from a moron.

Not at all. The sound (vibration) could be being transmitted, and amplified, via the bulkhead more easily than through the air to your ear out of the window.

Thanks AL203. Further investigation will take place in the morning. I'll let you know how I get on. Cheers again matey.

If you've made some expensive upgrades recently the high pitched wining is probably your missus.
