Hi all,

I've noticed a high pitched whine (like a noise something electrical/electronic might make) when the RR is switched off, key out of the ignition.

I can hear it in the engine bay with the bonnet up.

I was surprised to find the battery flat this morning as it started fine yesterday (haven't run it since last Saturday).

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hmmmm on my classic, the brake boost pump kept running as the relay stuck closed, burnt out the pump and flattened the battery!,

OK, so having had a quick look and using the screwdriver-pushed-up-to-the-ear stethoscope, the whining appears to be coming from the alternator.

Is there something I have missed about alternator technology?

Sounds like it could be a loose connection inside. Something could be about to give up. What kind of charging voltage do you get?

Alternator swapped out, no more noise. Weirdly the noise stopped as the alternator moved as I removed it. May be a loose connection internally. Refurb time.

Shorted/loose turns on the windings can cause what you describe.
