hello all. just brought my first freelander. 1.8 petrol 2000 model v reg

firstly im going to service it the week end and want to replace tranny oils and axle oils etc.

does anyone know what oil i should be using?

also the car seems fine apart from one problem, sometimes when at idle the engine speed raises upto 1500 and sometimes 2000 rpm. it feels like the idle air valve is holding the revs on. i have fit a second hand valve but its still the same. if i manually screw the motor in my self a few turns it will then idle ok at 800 rpm and will be fine for a while. then for no reason it will be high again days later. killing and re starting the engine makes no difference.

any suggestions guys?
thanks

Had a similar problem did you replace the throttle body with a plastic one as these are prone to sticking I replaced ours with a metal type bought on ebay transformed the car and cured he sticking prolem.

Oily

You need to reset throttle position sensor, turn ignition lights on, press throttle pedal 5 times to the floor in succession, switch off ignition lights again. Could be sticking butterfly valve or cable
