Now imagine having that happen EVERY time you drive in the dark. Multiple times a journey. I probably get temp blind 15-20 times a night. Not my idea of fun just so some selfish [explicitly deleted] can see half an inch further down the road and because it "looks cool."

All cars will never have them as they are already obsolete. LED lamps are the next big thing, and much cheaper for the manufacturers to fitSo once all cars have them we will all get used to them like the halogens

Been thinking of using the outdoor Christmas fairy lights-they are LED's !!
Er Indoors Vectra has the factory fitted projector HID's with halogen main beam, the light from the dipped beam hid's in my opinion is crap apart for illuminating the large green road signs. They are self levelling with washers...and set up right.
Just a gadget methinks, just like electronic park brakes.

I can imagine that to get an equivalent LED replacement to the same lumen output is probably quite expensive at the moment ?
I have it on good authority ( from an led light manufacturer) that they still haven't cracked the depth if light penetration ( distance it lights up). The can be very bright but no depth, hence they are very good for warning lights or sidelights, not not very good, at the no, for headlights or fog/spot lights.

Metal halide requires a ballast and igniter and the lamp has limited life. LED has a regulated power supply and a life of 50,000 to 100,000 hours, it uses less than a quarter of the power. Over the life of the lamp they work out considerably cheaper than MH, HP Sodium or MV
All our street lights are slowly changing over the LED to cut electricity demand/cost.

Bored with Christmas so looked up some figures.
60Watt domestic bulb 800 lumens = 13.3 lumens per watt.
Tungsten Halogen car bulb = 24 lumens per watt.
HID bulb = 50 lumens per watt.
CREE LED = 186 lumens per watt
All figures approximate and obtained from the internet.
No contest, LED rules OK?

But the cheapo components within the drivers always fail !!!
Yes metal halide costs more to run but the igniter and ballast last forever
Just a coil of cable within the ballast unlike the loads of capacitors and resistors within modern LED drivers

Halide lamps don't last though and there is not much to fail in the LED drivers. I've also had ballasts fail.

HID's last double maybe three times compared to more than 10 times for LED's. A lot of ballasts are electronic these days as well.They last a lot longer than halogens

i know what you mean mate.
cant moan, i had them fitted on my freelander
- although hardly ever got flashed at by other drivers ?? they were aimed down though...but i do also flash people with aftermarket HID's if their blinding me.
and my HID's in my OEM lights have a high beam flap in the HID lens so my main beam is also the xenon, which is nice and bright when you flash other oncoming xenon users
