I've joined as I need help with my Freelander TD4 '53 reg, Serengeti.
Whilst driving the engine lulls occasionally, during which time black smoke bellows from the exhaust. It disappears when I de-accelerate, or when the engine suddenly picks up again. It has become more regular.
I've noticed that the car lacks oomph going uphill, plus doesn't like to go above 70ish.
I have changed the fuel pump and filter, which seemed to help at first, but the same problem returned.
Anybody any advice please.

After looking around for similar problems, I found better answers than I got at the garages I asked for advice at.
This is brilliant for a non mechanic like me and now hopefully I'll be able to resolve the fault.
