Hi My 2004 Freelander 1 only had 80k miles and recently heard unusual excessive tapping engine sound like blown exhaust. Only when idling, When accelerated tapping sound diminishes and drives normally. When foot off the accelerator knocks again. Exhaust checked with kwikfit no leaks. Water pump cooling ok. Oil level fine. Any cause please. Terrible sound stopping at signals.

your not confusing mechanical tapping,
with diesel 'knock' .. per chance ???
[ i say that 'cause certain things .. like an injector fault can cause loud diesel knock
[ like when it can't deliver multiple injections per cycle

the vac pump can sound like a tapping sound ..
more evident at idle ..
but it's not a particular loud or unexpected noise .. normaly.

Crank pulley delaminating?

Shine a torch on it when engine idling and see if there are any shiny metallic particles floating around it.

Thank you, let me try will upload a video soon guys. Not joking having this Freelander since 2014, I am tuned to the idle sound so any difference my ear is well tuned to
First instance the sound suggests manifold end of exhaust leak. Kwik fit checked out and said no exhaust problems suggested to check water pump bearings. Cooling system working fine.

The only comment I can make is that I wish my L Series sounded that good.

Actually, I'm quite fond of my L Series agricultural tones.
