Hi All

New member just joined. Anthony Phillips, Caerphilly, South Wales.

I have bought a 3.9 V8 Vogue Se on a K 91 plate. Been sitting in a barn for two years so i got it (Or so i thought) for bargain.

I am no mechanic so I may become a pain by the amount of questions i ask, I therefore apologise in advance :)

Here's what I know so far, Exhaust needs replacing, engine is running on 6 cylinders but there is no sign of a head gasket problem, ie, no mayo in the water etc, front passenger seat will recline but wont come up.

I drove it home and was fine, steering was a little playful but then its not like driving my saab :)

Any thoughts, comments, advice or even just a hello back would be appreciated :)

:welcome2: Hi Ant and welcome to this madhouse of a forum.

If the motor's been stood, go through all the ignition system...plugs, HT leads, Rotor arm etc like a dose of salts. If you decide to change any of the components only use original parts, especially the dizzy cap and rotor as aftermarket tend to be ****e.
Seat problem is probably switch related and a good spray with switch cleaner NOT WD40 will probably sort that out.

Get started with those and feel free to post again if you still have any problems.

The guy i bought it off had the engine pressure tested and thats where the diagnosis of head gasket has come from. The "Bloke" at the garage said the gasket was probably split between the two cylinders and would need replacing, he also advised to have the head skimmed whilst it was off.

As for switch cleaner, is there a preferred brand amoungst the forum, as, in all honesty, I probably would have used WD40 :)

hi ant,get a switch cleaner that does not leave any residue after it has been used,look on maplins site for it,good luck with your new plaything.:D
 
Before just diving in and getting the head skimmed, check it or get it checked for flatness first..it should be flat to within around .002-.003". Remember that skimming reduces the volume of the combustion chamber slightly, but if it has a serious warp, it has to be done.
Regarding the switch cleaner, which is a useful addition to the toolbox, it is available from Maplins and other electrical/electronic shops, the advantages are that it does not leave any oily residue which can affect contact conductivity.
 
give it a service the as mentioned above ht leads, dizzy etc.Nice simple engine to work on
