Got to agree with YD on this one there are very few HGV jobs out there that are worth doing, It's took me 15 years on class1 tankers to find a decent one, I've just been for an interview at Shell at stanlow and was offered £34k for shifts, a 7+7% pension and retired in 12 years(@50) and after all the years of flack that I've had put up with I'm seriously considering telling them to shove it up their arse:mad:. Seriously mate the only advice I could give you is do something else. My mates dad was in shell 25 years ago and was on more than what they offered me.

i certainly do and i wouldnt reccomend it to anyone, unless you are a billy no mates workaholic that doesnt need money and loves working for pricks that treat you like a slave and looked down upon by everyone from motorists to old people including children and parents. getting ****ed wet through whilst unloading and then having to sit in a 25 mile tailback waiting to get to your next destination, only to be informed when you get there that you are late and you best "take the fooker back" to where you have just come from, only to find that when you tell your boss that its all your fault. then if this isnt bad enough, when ever you go anywhere and people ask "what do you do" you get a strange look once you tell them.oh and then there is the option to stay away from home for 4-5 nights a week sleeping in the great dirty thing you have been driving all day, a lovely tin 6 foot square shed. you even get the luxury of having a wash in a sink on motorway service stations and living on **** food in cafe'sthat are dirtier than an outside toilet.. or would you rather i lied ;)

So, Yella, you dont think its too bad, then?

After being in the agricultural industry all my life until being made redundant a few months ago that money doesnt sound to bad.Am i totally out of touch or what.

the money quoted there is for jobs in big cities and with big firms, you live in devon, haulage firms in devon pay agricultural labourers rates. i know of a firm in truro that had to gice their drivers a£2 per hour pay rise when the minimum wage came in, i kid you not!

I agree with Yella.

Most of the companies i come across are nothing short of crooks, I spend at least 3 hours aweek trying to get them out of the brown stuff, Me and the local TC in leeds are now on first name terms, i kid you not !!!!!

Keep well clear would be my advice !!!!!

Oh and i do have a class 1 licence too, Passed the test when i was 21 and spent 2 years being treated like crap !!!!!

I wouldn't bother with IT as well as most of the entry level jobs are **** 10 to 20k and all the rest have been offshore to India.
Field service engineer sounds a lot like YD description of going to site only to be told go away your late and then sitting in 20mile jams.
The only difference is you have smaller faster vehicle and less street cread in your mondao.
In short become a plumber it pays better, you get more respect and pepole will pay a plumber but the assume that a IT person will help you for free as IT Consultant is not a real job.

BTW did i mention that they teach IT in schools now, how many schools do you know that teach plumbing and HGV driving?

I cannot see why anyone would want to be a HGV driver ,locked away in you cab for hours on end , caught up in traffic jams , also seeing so many idiot drivers....And the gratitude and the sence of achievement need I go on..

And as for overtaking other 60 mph HGV vehicles....

I would rather go to jail , at least you have friends ,when you drop the soap...;)
