hasnt lost water but has sludgy stuff floating in expansion bottle
no sludge on inside of oil filler or dipstick
fans run after about two mins running, top hose hot, heater hose hot
bottom hose is cold thermostat not open
ONLY JUST HAD 36000 SERVICE

are you loosing oil?, does sound like a hg problem. water pump or thermostat sound like they have failed, causing the HGF. I have just replaced the HG on my engine, not an imposible job if you have a bit of mechanical know how.

Sounds like it :(, how long have you had the hippo? has it had hgf before. Sometimes garages do a repair and the coolant system isnt flushed properly, residue from the first hgf can still be present.

An engine block pressure test will confirm hgf, if you are a member of the AA or RAC then they can check the pressure on the coolant system and the presence of exhaust gases (sniffer test)

If its minor hgf then it is still possible to drive the vehicle until you decide to leave it in to a garage.

CAUTION - having said that a minor hgf could turn to major hgf at a any time so best to get it sorted asap.

Prices for a fix can range from £300 to £800

where are you based???

It looks like the oil is leaking to the cooling system. It is worst than coolant in oil as it can overheat the engine and leads to HGF.
If it is KV6, it may be the oil cooler. Not sure with 1.8 but you better get it checked.

got home today temp gage at middle but thermostat not open, had heater on full to try to keep temp down motor sounds like a bag of spanners but water is clear of sludge, going out now to take thermostat out then either work out how to by pass it as a temp bodge OR get the stella out the fridge OR MAYBE BOTH!! let you know how I get on

ok got thermostat off its on of those remote thingies you know plastic three pipes, any way boiled a kettle and filled it with water only a small trickle passed through not the expected rush ,I assume its knackerd?
the plastic casting is all one piece so no way of taking thermostat out without breaking it ---off to see the nice man at Landranger tomorrow

If your still not sure about the hgf, there is a coolant that is red, it changes colour to yellow if it mixes with combustion gases.

You might wanna fill your system will that stuff on refill

That remote thermostat in the pipes (PRRT) opens only when the pressure in the cooiling system is too high.

If the pressure escapes somehow for example if theres a small leakage or bad pressure cap or cracked head or dropped liners or blown gasket the thermostat wont open.
I would proceed to a pressure test.

Not forgetting there are two types of remote thermostat:

remote pressure relief thermostat (white housing)

remote standard thermostat (black housing)

They are shown in the link below

Edge - to check the stat, you would have to submerge the stat in boiling water, then pour more boiling water down the bypass, where the flow should not occur.
Repeat process for the radiator hose, where there should be a flow from inlet to outlet without a flow going through the bypass

..mine is grey!!

Yes I believe there are two variations of the PRT. I think the grey one has a lighter load spring, but dont quote me on that.

Will try and find the reference from another forum... could take a while

Edit- update, there are three types of PRT plus the remote stat

so if the water comes out the head up the top hose down to the rad how dose it cool the water if it dosnt flow through and out the bottom via the stat??

just read the post by LR1796 forgot to say that I have bought new stat its grey this means it should open earlier right?
because bottom hose remains stubbornly cold to the touch ergo no flow through rad, pulled bottom hose off water flows out --no blockage
CONFUSED JUST A BIT!!

RIGHT!!! Final update for today bled system filled water started her up left it tic over for 10-15 min stat OPENS ! all is good in the world and I am now drinking a well earned beer will sleep tonight without dreams of overheating and iminent meltdown GOODNIGHT!

Glad its sorted, yes the grey one will open earlier as less load on the spring and lower stat operating temp (82oC)

If you look at the link '+'

several posts above, this has three diagrams (scroll down a bit) showing whats happening inside the housing at different temps.

Its funny how all is well with the world after a cup of tea..... or a beer

here we are again funny how freelanders make you paranoid went to work today with heater on full chat to keep temp down got to work guess what?
stat not open !
on the way home call in at A49 4x4 in craven arms thats in Shropshire by the way, chewed the fat with the guys ,moaned a bit ,and decided to suck it and see run it up the road with heater off to see if she over heats STAT OPENS seems that heater could be keeping the temp below operating temp,
Ill run to work tomorrow sans heater and see what happens,
update to follow

Yes heater matrix will remove a lot of heat from the coolant system.

Have you just let the car run on idle for a while?

Lotus race boys have an adjustable flow on the heater inlet.

Classic case of mums bringing their kids to school on a cold morning. They all jump into the car with heater on full blast, meanwhile engine is cold and mum is giving it the death because the kids are late for school. It will surely end in hgf
