I'm very much dependant on weather Friday and Sunday I have free but if the weather is remotely good I gotta fit brakes and an exhaust to the offroader as it now moves but no stopping!!
Steering damper,
Swivels,
Wheel bearings
Ball joints
Bushes ect most should be ok but most not men don't really check
By tank slapper do you mean the steering wheel jumping back and forth and the front axle jumping as if driving at speed over sharp sleeping policemen set just 1 foot apart???
You feel it through the floor and the steering wheel with the whole front of the car feeling lose and jumping. Slowing down is the only way to stop it.
Steering damper. No point looking elsewhere. A good damper will hide all other faults. Could be steering damper rubbers if they are missing.
Other faults can be looked at as crossing "T"s and dotting the "I"s.
Rear a frame is pure bang when you let the clutch up. Drive hard on throttle and then let off throttle it will bang then too. Does #### all to the handling unless totally fell apart and you should have heard and felt that many thousands of miles ago.
Swivels, brgs, ball joints and bushes might be ####ed but the steering damper will dampen this slack down and wont let it develop into your "tank slapper" scenario. From your description damper for sure. Then check the other stuff cos you are supposed to do maintainence every now and then. As you all do maintainence you already know these other parts are in good condition. Dont you!!!
The steering damper does not need to be leaking to be ####ed.
If im welcome i may come allong next sunday. it will depend when im up though as i have my sister wedding on saturday. My landy should be back together by the weekend so that could be a good test trip. Is anyone heading from the Harpenden area?
