Do you think that LR missed the bus when it came to designing the Disco...
Something small maybe, but something which you think would've improved it just a little bit....

Would that have really upped the original price by so much that it put buyers off getting one in the first place?

It's not in the manufacturer's interest to make them long lasting. They want you to buy a new one.....

As Shippers said.

Stronger gearbox and better engine map. Rather than low map and gearbox near limit

Auto, should have had same box as V8
I met a guy on a caravan site once with a D2 that claimed it was the oil cooler on the auto box that wasn't up to the job. He had fitted an upgrade behind the front lower bumper. Cracking job he made of it too. I took it for a spin and it really moved through the gears well. I've never driven a standard auto D2 though so nothing to compare it with.

Autobox on my D2 was lovely. I used it mostly for towing, and had no problems with it at all.

If I was ever to change mine, which might be soon as its really ****ing me off at the moment, next one would be an auto.
I have a Saab 9-3 auto and its a great car.

Autos have improved a lot over the last 30 years, and are now much better on fuel economy.
And they are more pleasant to drive in stop start traffic, as is common over large parts of the UK these days.
And no clutch to wear out, and much gentler on the engine and drive train than manual.

I do not think the auto is better than the manual on the td5 D2 for fuel economy.

Remember we are talking about what they could have done....LOL.

Cheers

Never had a Td5 Disco. Mine was a V8. And it was pretty good on fuel, considering I was towing a cattle trailer most of the time.

As regards what they could have done, I would go with what James said. Galv chassis, and plastic wheel arch protectors wouldn't do any harm either. But those pretty much apply to all landrovers.
