Recently bought my 1st Landrover Freelander but ive got problems. I have a moaning noise coming from the front nearside. Ive been told by one garage its a wheel bearing and by another its my gearbox. Any ideas? My HDC light also doesnt come on except when i start the car and is there any way to stop the leak in my boot without drilling hole!!!! Can anyone assist?

without teaching you to suck eggs, you know HDC only works in 1st and reverse ?

the water leak in the boot. you may get lucky and cure it by taking the rubber seal completely off then refitting it, it will go back slightly different to when you took it off so may re-seal.

as for the noise, without hearing it hard to say, but does it do it when the vehicle is in neutral but rolling down a hill ?

good luck

Re the HDC Light.

The problem is in the gearstick itself, the wires have come out od the connector and thus the car does not know your in 1st or reverse. Pull up the front of the geastick gaitor and its clearly visible. Some people solder it in, i just uses an mini screwdriver to adjust the pin that holds the wires in (i.e put the wire in the use the screwdriver the close the metal pin that holds it it).

Normal operating of the HDC. Turn on engine and both HDC Lights will come on then go back off. Push down the HDC switch on gearstick and the orange HDC light will flash, select 1st or rev and the light will stay on.

If its a continious rumble that is present at all speeds then I would suspect a wheel bearing. That bearing gets plenty of abuse by round-a-bouts (Think about it, which tyre normally scrubs out on the atypical car? Front near side). As Optimus Prime stated, try rolling in neutral down a hill. If you can then cut the engine so you can hear better. Careful though, you've just cut the power steering pump and the brake servo so make sure its a quiet road. What you haven't told us is the mileage of the car.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice people! Optimus, yeah ive driven one before so i was aware of the 1st and reverse thing! :biggrin1: sound advice about the seal though, would it be worth buying new? I can confirm that the car does make the noise when rolling downhill in neutral. mrogers, Ill give it a go tomorrow. Darmain, its got 76000 on the clock but had an engine replacement at 24000. if its a wheel bearing would the noise ease off the faster i go? Really appreciate your input on this, the people in general chat werent as sympathetic!!! Think im going to have a busy weekend!!

76K is not massive but Ive come across Freebies that have shead bearings in the past with no real mileage. I think you will find it does seem to get quieter as the speed increases but really its still there but the road noise etc is drowning it out. Engine change after 24K!! Sounds like you have the 1.8 petrol engine then, the devils engine!! You won't get any sympathy from the tractor drivers that you came across. They don't like Freelanders (or Gaylanders as they like to call them). Just don't encourage them. However, you have found the true source of useful information in here. Keep us up to date on what you find. Between us we pretty well seen it all when it comes to the Freebie.

You met my mrs chaser? lol well ive spent most of the day trying to refit the seal on the back door and trying to find why the HDC aint working! mrogers, all the wires were connected so its still off. Any other ideas? Also managed to find i have a leak on the coolant system! Darmain, yeah its a 1.8! Devils engine? Think im definetly going to have to call the freelander Christine! :5breddevil: Any recommendations for cheap parts? There is guy on Ebay who wants £90 for a clock!!! Sorry forgot to ask, can you change just one bearing or do you do both sides at the same time??

No reason why you have to change both that I can think of. Just do the one.

Now where is this leak in the cooling system then?

Check the switch actually works using a resistance meter for your HDC.

i had a similar noise from nearside front in my disco.... openin the door n kickin her out stops it mate!!!!!!!!

1.8 Devil engine, hopefully you will find that when they changed the engine they also installed the coolant thermostat modification! Originally the coolant thermostat measured the temp as it came out of the radiator as opposed to out of the engine where it should have been located. Many cases of HGF for that issue!

Its true what Darmain said though, plenty of help in this section of the forum... well, to reasonable questions anyway :D

ok, ill just change the one then. Im removing the sump protector today to find the leak, just my luck to have an incontinent car! Thanks for the advice skynet, ill check it today. Any recommendations for part suppliers?
