Hi guys i'm new to thr forum as i only bought my freelander yesterday but here comes the bad news.... The car dies on me today, after towing it home and having a closer look i realized that when the ignition is on position II the reds (all the dash lights) dont show but it will crank but not start. After having a closer look a few of the fuel hoses on the injectors where ripped off. I replaced the hoses and i got my neighbour who is a truck mechanic to bleed the fuel system (im not sure if its done properly or if i should take his word for it) but it still didnt work. It did start once and the SRS light stayed and and nothing else but as soon as we turned it off and tried to start it again it would continue to crank but not start. Also another thing i noticed was the time it "did" start the dash lights all came back on just before it started ..... I also checked the Haynes service & repair manual as well as the RAVE workshop CD and found nothing that can help.

I bought this car for my partner as we are expecting a little one and needed a decent sized and comfortable car and now its screwed me the day after i purchased it!

If anyone has any idea or can point me in the right direction that would be much appreciated!! If anyone in melbourne can fix it ill pay them or if anyone knows someone that knows a mechanic that knows there land rovers and wont charge me an arm leg and a kidney please let me know. I recieve emails on my mobile phone so even a quick email to this address head_vlct@hotmail.com would be great. I service pneumatic, hydrologic, electronic and mechanical workshop equipment so i'm pretty good with my tools and mechanically minded so again if someone can point me in the right direction i'd be over the moon.

Sounds like a very weird problem!! I would guess something electronic is broken or a connector/wire to it is faulty. Maybe the ECU or something is wrong?

Do you have any clue how the fuel lines got loose??

And what engine? and model year?
 
sounds like you have buggered ignition switch, you have acc and start but have lost ign on-check with meter and also check you have not l;ost power to the fuse box
 
Sorry guys forgot to mention its a 1998 XEDi 2.0ltr turbo diesel and yes i'm from OZ Melbourne to be specific :). I discovered the fuel lines when i got it home. They were worn and split and were leaking i replaced them last night as i had some spare 4m fuel hose then bled the lines though still had the ignition issues and the ignition lights not showing. This morning i tried kicking it over again and nothing. When the tow truck turned up i turned the ignition to unlock the steering wheel and all the dash lights lit up then the SRS light stayed on so i gave it a crank and it started... turned it off after a few minutes and tried straight away to start it again and nothing again.

Could the electronic issues be caused because of the fuel issue set of error codes in the ECU? Does anyone know what else it could be? I spent 2 hours last night going over things but no luck except once it started and it wouldn't start again. I have had a good look all over the internet and some websites mentioned that even if the battery is on it's way out this could be causing it... is this true? Can the error codes that are registered be cleared without a Land Rover specific diagnostic tool?

Also while looking through all the service/repair receipts i obtained from the previous owner, i found that the ignition switch had been replaced roughly a year ago. I tested it with a multimeter last night and it seems to be getting power etc.

Car is with a mechanic now hopefully he doesn't force me to sell my liver to pay for the repairs!!

Any info is still greatly appreciated, if it's a job i can do myself i'll have it towed back home and do it myself.

I would make sure to bring it to a qualified Land Rover specialist not just any garage!They should indeed be able to read out the car with a reader, this could point out a problem in seconds.
 
A duff battery can cause all sorts of problems with a car's management system nowadays.
How does the car crank? Lively or sluggishly?
If sluggish, does battery respond to overnight charge?

I think its going to be a case of identifying issues, getting each sorted and moving onto the next until its fixed. At least you will know at the end of it all what is good on the car. :)

Get the codes read and reset. A Landrover dealer will have a reader to identify all codes. Not all equivalent ECU readers will identify all codes on a specific car.

Oh, and if you dont speak local yokel like some on this forum and dont understand an answer just say so ;)
 
Hey Guys.

After spending a day with the mechanic he discovered that there was now no power going to the ECU! I had all ready checked this with my meter though it was intermittently doing it so when i checked it, it looked ok.

I then got the car down to an auto electrician who put the car on the scanner found fault with the ignition switch which in turn blew a diode on the ecu. Apparently when replacing the fuel return lines and trying to start it again this had happened..... Anyway replaced the switch and had the ecu sent off for repairs. In total this all cost me $765AUS and today i am of to have a word to the mechanic that issued the certificate of rodworthiness a day before all these 3 leaking fuel lines got me in a whole heap of trouble.

Funny thing happened though now when i drive the car i can "really" hear the turbo spooling loudly, this wasn't the case before the repairs i just had. All the inter cooler hoses etc are on tight and there is minimal shaft play in the turbo..... Does anyone know what this could be and how loud should the freelander turbo diesel be as i'm concerned about this too?? OHHH and i almost forgot now the ABS light stays on when you start the car but as soon as you drive off it disappears, the auto elec says he has seen this before with the landrover and some other models for example toyota and it common but not an issue. Is this true??

Just worked out what that whistle is when the turbo is boosting.... The gasket between the inlet manifold and the crossover pipe (the one that the inter cooler hose goes on to) has crapped itself and needs to be replaced... hopefully after i replace the gasket there are no other issues that arise. And i checked with my mechanic the ABS light will stay on when starting the car but when the car is in motion it turns off.
