Hi All HELP
On the 1st this month purchased a 2005 TD4 FreeLander facelift from a well known Land Rover Agent down here on the south coast. This weekend checked oil level as you do only to find that the oil is Jet black in colour. The car I was told would be serviced. I have done about 250 miles if that, the oil should still be clear to look at. Also so I can check it can you tell me where is oil filter located on the engine is it new screw on canister type or the old in a housing type.
Need some comments and help please.

can't help with this specific motor but never had a derv run with clear oil for longer than about 2 minutes... in my experience oil in a derv goes jet black as soon as you change it...

The oil will turn black immediately upon running, especially if the garage used the dipstick to drain the old oil out of. The oil filter is an element type which is situated front left hand side between the block & radiator. You need a 36mm socket to undo the plastic top.

ps you won't be able to tell from the filter whether it's new or not. Take the garage at its word or do your own change for peace of mind.

Oil in a diesel engine will always be black in colour, you will never find clear oil in a diesel sump unless you check after an oil change befoe it's been run up. It blackens as soon as the engine runs.

Personally would never trust any garage to carry out a service on motor if oil is changed its often with cheap ****e...best to diy

Thank you all this is the first Diesel engine always had petrol before. Was not aware oil will turn black immediately upon running. You have put my mind at rest thank you. Kind regards best wishes Steve.
