My lovely TD4 keeps having clutch problems. Started about a week after I bought it, everything was fine on test drive and way back,( 40 miles ISH) diagnosed possibly wrongly as knackered gearbox. This was exchanged and I had a few months of happy driving. Then it "went" again. 700 quid and new slave cylinder later worked fine until July after passing mot with advisory on back brake pads. Since having this done it has failed again. Had new master cylinder fitted about 4 weeks ago. Had the car back for a whole day before it went again.
Diagnosed by 4x4 specialist as leak around flywheel etc.Now looking at new flywheel and whole new clutch for a mere thousand pounds. Is there a simpler/ cheaper fix? Topping up and pumping the pedal isn't working anymore, it's done for. Advice please

I had a similar problem it was a failed slave cylinder ive just replaced mine over a total of 8 days dodging work and weather. job was done on axle stands and wasn't much fun

I'm just reeling at a garage that changed gearbox without doing clutch at same time! The symptoms of a bad clutch or bad gearbox are so different how the monkeys did they get that wrong? Back to garage, tell them they misdiagnosed then, as above, if fluid is being lost and can't be seen by master cylinder or pipes get them to do slave properly. Hope you have receipt for work as it should be warranteed. This is a gearbox out again!!!

Thanks Andy.
This is what all of my mechanically minded friends have said too. The invoice mentioned a plug on some part that has a worn thread, fixed with "sealant", could this be the source of the leak?
Mates all agree that if flywheel was at fault there would be juddering, there isn't.

Ps
Guys that changed the gearbox were doing me a personal favour but don't know much about landys, the slave cylinder was replaced about this time last year by an actual mechanic. Going to call him now

It's unlikely to be the DMF. However it seems like the concentric has failed. I'd strip the whole lot out and replace everything, except the DMF.

Mines a 2005/6 55 plate. Freda

That could be a clue. Leaky thread fixed with sealant!! Could be the bleed valve?? If it is leaking from there it may be fixable without gearbox out.

Just spoken with mechanic, he says that it isn't the bleed nipple , it was something else, unspecified but when he looked t'other day that was still intact

So next move is to get him to find out where fluid is going. If it is the slave cylinder then he should be up for replacing under warrantee. Still be worth knowing what the unspecified thing is - for the future !!

Sounds like they haven't a clue what's going on. You'd know if the bleed nipple/screw was leaking as there'd be fluid all over the top of the box. Same for the push fit connector. If the slave was leaking, you'd see fluid dripping out of the bell housing (especially as you're topping it up). If I remember correctly, they're not sealed all round to aid water draining out after wading, etc.

Have they told you what the "unspecified" fault is? Have they found a leak or not?

Like Andy said, they're obliged to get this sorted since the've taken a fair wedge from yer pocket. But there's no harm in a second opinion at another garage.

That's the safest bet in my opinion. At least you'll know where you stand. It's a time consuming job but in my opinion, the garage owe you. Perhaps you could be there to inspect it yourself if they pull the gearbox again? Check for leaked fluid in the bell housing, on the clutch plate and flywheel.

Thanks.
All pointing to slave cylinder. 2nd opinion guy said that there was fluid around the bell housing?
Can you still get Haynes manuals?
Think I need one if I'm going to keep the landy!

Certainly worth having the manual so that you get to know the vehicle and can then discuss problems with garages even if you don't intend on doing the work yourself. Fluid around bellhousing sounds defo like the slave cylinder or associated pipework. Still reckon it is worth getting back to garage that did it. Should last longer than a year!!

Thanks guys
Original mechanic had her back under warranty. Slave knackered due to clutch mechanism " over extending" , causing leak. Comment from grease monkeys in the pub ", load of testicles! "
Got my brother to talk to him, now getting fixed . Not under warranty unfortunately, as he says that my clutch caused the problem and the makers won't take it back.
Can't watch the work as no wheels and the village where the garage is only gets 3 buses. A week.Hopefully will get her back Tues pm or weds, happier but even poorer

No clutch design that I know of will cause leak of slave when clutch is worn out. Small chance another part of clutch mechanism is damaged but sounds like a cop out. Wish I was nearer I'd go and 'supervise'!!!!

Thanks Andy,
I wish you could too!
Definitely going to get to know more about the Freelander,
Do all mechanic's see someone female and take it as an excuse to pass a load of bollix off as superior knowledge? Or just the ones in Yorkshire?

In my experience they don't just keep it for females. They work on the basis that you don't have to know much more than the customer to be an expert!! In their defence they are mostly trained to replace 'modules' and not to understand the basic principles of how things work. Depends how involved you want to get but it is entirely reasonable to ask for the old damaged pieces to be kept. They are yours after all. Then photos please!! Hope it all works out despite the cost and inconvenience. And get reading t'manual!!!! :)
