My defender 90 used to have a 2.5 petrol in it and now it's a 2.5 n/a diesel the change had already been done when I brought it but if I turn my truck off it keeps running unless I push he break Pedal

I seen to remember something like this being mentioned in the past and it was something like a duff/wrong bulb in the brake light or a duff brake light housing coupled with a dodgy earth that caused power to remain on the 'ignition on (position 2) power lines. Probably worth a search but sure someone else will chip in soon.

2 main possibilities come to mind (generic diesel knowledge, not LR 2.5-specific):

1. shut-off solenoid not wired up correctly / not fitted with plunger / faulty.
2. engine sucking oil and running on that once the fuel's shut off.

I'd check the fuel shut-off first if I were you. Has been known for people like me to bodge the wiring or the valve itself as a get-me-home measure.

The stop soldinoid is brand new and I fitted it and that's fine and no it's not a new trick it used to work if u put the reverse light on to

unlikely to be the engine sucking oil, as this would keep running irrespective of pressing the brake pedal.

maybe worth checking the feed to the stop solenoid, not sure how this is wired, but possibly if it is a switched earth with a cable chafed, or some kind of back feed through the earths, don't know why but I'm thinking lights too.

Ok cheers I have noticed that one of my break light bulbs might be the wrong on as the lights work but when the break is on it light goes off so think the bulb is single fillerment not double but would that keep the engine running ?

Don't think so.

I suspect when it was changed to diesel something wasn't wired up right.

Try taking the bulb out to see if that cures it or if the holder is corroded.

I assumed "press the brake pedal" meant "stall it" (another previous tactic) :p

Definitely sounds like all is not well with the wiring to the solenoid. You can fit a switch in line to it (or just open the bonnet with the engine running and pull the wire off the solenoid, with insulated pliers, if it's accessible - I'm not familiar with the 2.5 - to test).

I assume it doesn't cut out with the ignition switch on and the brake pedal pressed?
