You can get the landy back, don't worry so much! People use defenders all around the world because they are simple, have a tried and tested design and there is hardly anything there to go wrong on them! When was the last time you saw a freelander 2 on an expedition?
 
Update on rolled-over Defender: we've managed to get the roof, back and doors off so it's now possible to see better what still might need stripping down further. As a non-expert, I'm not sure what further I need to remove. Any suggestions very welcome! :confused: I hope these photos are clear/helpful...

Lol, I know.

I was surpised at the differences in the nuts and bolts for same or corresponding parts, what I mean is the ones that you would expect to be identical on matching sides, were all different, suggesting a lot of previous restoration had taken place...got me wondering whether this might suggest previous accidents and hence will this affect the future stability/structure? I know one has to declare previous accidents, but I guess not everyone does...

One question that's also sprung to mind is, even if stuff looks ok, how will I know if it's, for example, out of alignment? Should I assume if it is looks ok then it is, and let them check this when it goes for its test?

I'd replace anything vital. Chances are they will be ok but i wouldn't risk things like breaks and steering. New engine mounts etc.
 
I think you need to see if someone local can have a poke around. Pictures are good for an idea but they can't show everything. Like khaos says, its probably better safe than sorry, so anything you have a doubt about is probably worth replacing. If you have a poke around yourself under your dash make sure you take some more pictures. There are a lot of very knowledgeable members on here who may be able to help you.
 
If it was me I wouldn't be afraid to give anything a good whack with a hammer. If it breaks then it was dangerous and you can hear dodgy sounding metal anyway.
