Hello everyone.

Before posting this I’ve had a good look round the forum but could not find a thread relating to my problem.

95 M reg Discovery 300 Tdi.
When I change gear and let the clutch out I get a loud “clonking” sound from the front end.
Yesterday I had to nip up the M1, when I got to just over 70mph It felt like it was going to disintegrate, the vibration and noise was out of this world, I backed off on the accelerator and it smoothed out even though I was still doing the same speed……put my foot back on the accelerator and she was off banging and vibrating again.

I thought it was the prop shaft, so today I fitted a reconditioned one, took her out for a test drive and shes no better.

Any help would be appreciated.

its possible the the wheels/tyres are not balanced. try swapping them around and see if it makes any difference. or get them balanced.
 
I was thinking about the wheels, but would`nt i get the vibaration at lower speeds also?

to add;it feels like the wheels a square and the main vibaration is coming from under the driver seat........take my foot of the accelatator and it runs smooth at the same speed.
 
no you wouldnt get the same vibration at another speed. summat to do with resonounce (spellin?) or harmonics.

still worth trying swapping the wheels around.
 
assuming the prop is o.k it could be down to just getting the right uj alignment to balance the shaft. i think there should be ailgnment marks on the two half of the shafts.
 
you`ll have to excuse me i`m really thick when anything Mechanical is involved….

I changed the front prop myself, fitter was busy and told me “8 nuts you’ll do it in no time”…..I didn’t line any thing up I just put it on….the disco reacts in the same way it did before I put the new front prop on.

Had a word with a independent land rover garage today, they cant get it in until 9th Feb….he did mention the rubber coupling on the rear prop {that you suggested}.

Bit worried about using it, but I’ve got no choice….

Since I had the tyres done i`m not getting any vibrating on the steering, it does feel like the back end and the centre console.
Feels like I’m going down hill with square back wheels with my foot down in second gear with a loud buffeting sound…..
Take my foot of the accelerator and it stops, just touch the accelerator and it starts again…..makes you think the accelerator is connected to the problem..

And i`m still getting a loud “clink” when I change gear and use the clutch.

on the balance of the front prop i'll get underneath mine tommorow and see if i can see what lines up with what. the rubber coupling on the back prop, diff end is easy enough to see if its in good nick or not. put a screwwdriver or a piece of flat bar in the back prop uj's and give them a little lever to see if theres any movement in them, if theres any movement then chances are you need to sort this one to.
 
just had another thought, may help or not.
on the propshafts there is a balance weight, it may have fallen off.
(usually about the size of a label).
 
Hi other things to check is that rear prop bolts arnt loose and in the back of the rear prop is a bush which slides onto a locating dowel fitted in the read diff flange sometimes the bush breaks up or the flange can come loose are all your wheel bearing tight not to much free play also check for broken mounts on engine and transfer box hope any of this helps tiga

I took her into a LandRover garage{independent} near Barsnley this morning....

Its the rear diff and maybe a problem with a UJ on the rear prop, shes going in wednesday.

Been quoted around £300 for the diff and fitting, does that sound about right?

if you only get the noise when you are putting force through the drive train and not when the disco is crusing would indicate to me that the clutch is on its way out. sorry to be negative.
