Evening all, I have recently purchased an 03 plate td4, the mot had an advisory for a nail in the nearside rear tyre, it was in the side wall near the outer edge. I had it removed and repaired, but was told the repair may not last, as it was near the outer edge. I now have a slow puncture.
My dilemma is, the tyres all round are general grabber A/T with the rear tyres in excellent condition (except for slow puncture), and the fronts are pretty good too, so I was thinking of either getting two new grabber A/T for rear wheels, or four new tyres all round, but these would have to be budget tyres.
Any advice will be much appreciated, thank you.
 
its fortunate in a way that it's one of the rears that has the puncture, just change both rears for a new pair of general grabbers if the fronts are pretty good, more important to have new on the back given the well documented transmission issues related to the tyres.
Nothing wrong per se with fitting four matching budget jobs but it depends on your preference as road noise, longevity and grip may well differ from your current choice.

its up to you then 2 new general grabbers on the rear or 4 new budget ones i recommend event ml698 have been great for me so far

orrrr just put tyre weld in the rear one with a slow puncture (not the best but has been in a few vehicles i know now for yearssss)
 
I would be looking on e bay for a part worn general grabber with the same tread wear as the one that your replacing :)
 
You haven't said what your spare is, so if it isn't a Grabber AT, then I would get 2 new Grabber AT fitted to the rear and put the good one on the spare wheel.

Obviously you didn't want to have to spend money - but this must be the best solution to the problem you have.

What ever - I would absolutely recommend against more repairing if there's a possibility of more loss of pressure. 2 tyres are a lot cheaper than an IRD!
 
Evening all, thanks for all the quick replies and advice. My tyre size is 215/65/16, and I have had a price for event ml698 at £62 each, and also a jinyu tyre at £55 each. I may go for two new grabber A/T as suggested, and keep old tyre as a spare, but I don't know the price of these yet, i'll keep you posted.
 
I decided to go for four new budget tyres, due to the price of grabber a/t. The tyres I had fitted are kenda klever hp, and I must say my freelander drives like a different vehicle, and also, the noise which I thought was a worn wheel bearing has disappeared!!
 
I'm going to throw a spanner in the works here. If your rear grabbers were in good condition, why didn't just change the tyre with the puncher? It won't harm the transmission and grabbers will perform better than budget tyres. I hope you kept the grabbers for future use?
 
No I did'nt keep any grabbers, but as I said the bearing type noise has gone, so maybe there was another problem with them anyway.
I have just had the vcu changed by Bell engineering, I had removed the prop when I bought the car, I followed Hippos guide ( thanks Hippo). Car drives great so I'm happy with it at the mo!!
