Had a look at the car this morning.

The coolant level was very slightly low but not much. Left it running on the drive for 30 minutes or so and there was some heat coming out of the vents when the temperature was set at maximum but it was warm rather than hot. I felt the heater hoses and they were only warm where they go in through the bulkhead. However, when I felt the top radiator hose it was pretty much the same temperature and looking at the gauge it was only just above the blue section. The weather was quite cold here today but I would have thought the gauge should have risen more, even sat on idle. I need to take it for a decent run to see how much the gauge comes up but it looks like I might have a thermostat that is stuck open. Can you access a hidden menu to check the exact engine temperature like you can on BMWs?

I believe you can get one at poundland..................... [a cup holder - not a divorce..........................]

I ran with no stat for a while....never got above 80degC......

Sounds like that could well be my problem then. It doesn't look to b too difficult, or expensive to change, so probably worth doing to eliminate it anyway

The stat is fixed into an elbow housing.....to remove mine I had to physically break it out of the housing....without breaking the housing itself....easy enough to do so could have been done to yours.

on the td6 there is another thermostat on the egr, easy to get at, when you take the first cover off in front of the rad, it has a bleed screw on top. These have been known to stick open and quite a few peeps have had a lot of success changing it out. Think mine needs doing as temperature gauge rarely gets past the 10 to 5 to position, not too expensive either.

Greg,

I had read about that one too and I was planning on changing them both. However, if it is relatively easy to change, I might as well do it first and see if that improves things. If not I will have to do the main stat as well.

Thanks,

Glen.

Is it the same part number as the BMW 3.0 diesel? There are genuine Mahle ones listed on E-bay for about £20.00.

Hi, Glen.
sorry mate have no idea about the bmw compatible part. Only been looking on the usual sites, island 4x4 etc. Also I think the freelander diesel shares the same part. I won't be doing mine until the weather warms up,along with a few other jobs.
These range rovers don't half keep you busy.
Best of luck. Greg.

Hi Glen, just had a quick look and various photos reveal bmw part no, 2 247 723. BEHR comes up as the equivalent part. One way to confirm is to whip off the black cover at the front ( in front of rad ) and the part no should be visible if it's the same then happy days only 20 quid as apposed to lr 50 to 70 quid. Shall check mine when I get chance.

Thanks Greg. Our car is due back from the body-shop tomorrow, so I will take a look at the weekend. The BMW part number for an X5/730d/530d/330d of the same era is 1171 7787 870. Going to try and do it fairly soon, as it could do with running a lot warmer in this weather. Having quite a few initial teething problems with this one but the previous owner recently spent £4000 getting the more major items sorted (recon 'box, recon injectors, refurbished alloys etc.), so hopefully it will all fall into place.
Glen.

Hi Glen, had a look at egr thermost

Hi Glen, just had a quick look, and it is the same number I quoted in the previous post for the egr thermostat. Sounds like yours and my car are going through similar maintenance. I've recently had the g/box refurbed, new rims and tyres and lots of service items, discs, calipers, pads, filters etc. Would I change it NO. Beautiful car to drive and couldn't be further away from my old td5. Best of luck with your car.

Greg, Just had a look at our car and it is the same, 2 247 723 BEHR, so I will order one from E-bay and get it changed. I did a couple of trips in the car today and, with an ambient temperature of 3-4 degrees, the temperature gauge fluctuated from just under the first line past the blue section, to very slightly over it. I guess it should ideally reach about halfway up the scale.

We bought our car from a guy that had bought it from a liquidation company. He bought a fleet of private ambulances from the liquidators as a business deal and the Range Rover was at the garage that maintained them, with its gearbox out. It had belonged to the owner of the ambulance company and was being repaired when the company went out of business. Lawrence bought the car himself to sell on, and had the garage fit a reconditioned gearbox, overhaul the injectors, refurbish the wheels and give it a full service, spending a total of just over £4000. Strangely enough it has been bought to replace our Discovery TD5 as well. The Range Rover is much more powerful and far more civilised, so much so, that it easy to find yourself going way faster than you realise.
