Ok guys n gals, I've read a couple of threads on here and am guessing I need a new Rotary Coupler or Clock Spring!? 2000 reg TD4 horn's stopped working, tried the locking with door open n it sounds, so all fuses wires etc must be ok right? Not operating from either switch on the steering wheel. Realise it can be an expensive fix but is there a way of by passing this and simply rewire the horn to a new switch?? Advice welcome please...Andy, from Norfolk living in Suffolk!!

Surely there's got to be a way. You'll need to identify/locate the wires that goes to the steering wheel switches. EIther earth or +12v will be applied and you should be able to route to a simple (spring return) switch.

(Might also be a bad connection from steering wheel assembly plug)

just a hunch (nice intro by the way), have you replaced the radio lately ?

horn earths through the radio, some replacements have caused issues with the horn.

just wondering like...

I have the same problem with a 2002 TD4 I bought recently. The radio was replaced before I got the car, so wondering/thinking that's the source of me problems. But I haven't seen any posts on how to correct the problem, have you any pointers, it would be much appreciated.

Cheers for your comments people, would you believe that the "fecker" is working again!? Had the car a couple of weeks, Radio is the original but does display "error 60" when I turn it off!? I'm wondering if I've nipped a wire when i've adjusted the steering height? Who knows? i'll wait now till it plays up again!! Cheers....Andy

Can anyone tell me where "HEADER 0723 (K109)" is located on a 2002 Freelander. From looking at the ciruit diagram for the Rotary Coupler it seems that the ground for the rotary coupler is connected to HEADER 0723 (K109). I'd like to avoid removing the steering wheel and was wondering if I can check that the header is connected to ground.

it would be more certain to test the continuity of rotary coupler itself ,its just a long tape of wire 1 or more often break

Thanks for that. Guess it's roll up the sleeves time. Having looked at the circuit diagrams I just can't see any link between the radio buttons & the horn, there again, the circuit diagrams might not actually reflect what is in place in the car. But first stop will be check earth on the rotary coupler.

rotary coupler carries all the connections for steering wheel functions .it isnt grounded specifically ,its just a flexible loom for want of a better description ,

The TD4 rotary coupler seems to have 4 pairs of flexible connections, possibly via printed circuits. One pair will be your driver's airbag, another pair the horn switches, leaving a pair for audio remote control (which I've never used) and the final pair for the cruise control (which may not be fitted). The latter pair you could regard as spares but I was lucky, the horn fault was in the earth return connection so I fitted a short, thin piece of wire with a 4mm ring crimp under an additional fixing screw where the cruise control was not fitted and soldered it to a green horn wire going to the RH horn switch. I recommend soldering, not just twisting together, and sliding a short piece of heatshrink tubing over the join. I forgot the latter of course so just taped it up.
I don't recommend popping out a horn switch, they are rather crude and a bit fiddly to re-insert correctly.
