theres me worrying about the crock of **** i will be buying for 3k,never mind got a big hammer, and loads of knolegable people on here only to happy to help me through keeping said crock of **** going, because we are all in the same boat, wish i had a 16k budget,if you can find a good enough example OP go for a late 200 or 300 tdi, learn how your vehicle works, buy some tools, fix it when it breaks

I know what you are saying and appreciate the advice but I think I will go for the new car as I cant afford servicing right now and this vehicle will be covered for a few years so I can learn as I go. I want to keep this vehicle for a very long time so the low mileage is attractive.

If I do have any problems I suppose I could just jump on the forum (or get my butler to do it for me) and maybe send a Private Message to the resident bundle of joy that is Storm99 and ask for help.

Can't afford servicing?????? My last full service cost me about £70, that was engine, gear box, transfer box and diff oils plus filters and grease;);)

What kind of logic is that? The money you save by not buying new will more than cover servicing costs for a few years :/

That's the sort of logic that makes people sell their perfectly good cars, then spunk thousands on a new car to save a few quid a year in fuel and road tax....

The same sort of thinking is what made so many people take up the crazy scrappage scheme, despite owning perfectly good cars :(

New cars need servicing, at a proper garage to preserve the warranty, so you better not buy a new car if you can't afford to have it serviced. Spend much less than £16,000 on an older vehicle and use the money saved for servicing and mods

Haha budget of 16k! lucky bugger, why don't you look for private ads, this way you may not lose money when you buy, try looking on pistonheads at private ads you can almost always get people down on their price, just put a cheeky offer in, they will either say F*ck off or they will get back to you!
