Hi everyone got an n reg 300 tdi auto engine and box the engine is ecu type gonna pull pump off put mechanical one on anyone have any ideas how i get the box to work without all the stuff off the disco harness etc any help would be good
 
Gearbox is purely manual operation it did not go electronic until td5 came along, it has a mechanical cable that links to engine, then to cruise control/throttle cable.
 
you any idea what the electrical connections are on it ive got the kickdown cable hanging from the box ,need to find out what the connections are on the box ie speedo negative positive etc
 
Might be worth trying to retain the EDC. LR used it because they made more power and the Tdi is a slug with an auto box. You can tune the EDC’s these says too.

4 wire loom 2 for engine inhibitor 2 for reverse light, you swap the speedo drive for one from the defender to suit the speedo cable

I had a late 300tdi with edc, it was slow so slow the throttle could be treated as an on/off switch, I then chipped it, bloody hell it proper flew, the td5 that I replaced it with was a proper dissapointment!
300tdi edc and auto box, an under rated engine set up if ever there was one.
 
if i was keeping edc would mean i would have to chop the disco one down to its main components to run the engine i am good with wires but would be a bit of a pain i think,i have a 300 tdi double cab and its a rocket boost pin and ring and it pulls like a train ,it maybe something i might consider if i get myself a tdci dash i will be able to stick all the boxes behind that will figure something out .ps what is the engine inhibitor i know i sum dumb but what does it inhibit
 
I know that is easy to say, but it can't be that difficult to swap over the parts as the 110 chassis and Disco 1 chassis are very similar. (it was easy to type anyway.)
I would think that separating the engine loom from the main loom would be the most difficult part.
The only other concern would be if the management system needs to retain the electronic speedo in order to function correctly.
 
yup i get ya the disco setup is totally different wiring wise compared to defender if you didnt use the tdci dash you would have no were to stick the ecu i was thinking maybe in a sealed box under bonnet the wiring aint really the bigest problem as my current defender has 3 harnesses joined together basically i made use of what i had v8 to tdci to td5 and all works perfectly didnt bother farting about trying to use defender speedo just used a satellite one sorted lol
 
I think the inhibitor simply means the engine wont start if the auto box is in gear, which could be interesting!

I think it stands for something like electronic diesel control or similar. It's basically an early ECU type of controlled injector pump, rather than a fully mechanical one relying fully on spring pressures and vacuum.

They always made more power stock for stock than the mechanical pump, but where only on late 300Tdi Disco auto's. In an attempt to improve performance and likely emissions. For many years you couldn't tweak or tune these and I think the electronics scared many off.

These days I'm lead to believe there are several tuning options open to them. And they will generally out perform the mechanical pump. I don't have much first hand experience, but I'd be amazed if it was that difficult to retain, it's not as if any Disco 1 was complex electronic wise really.

I think some parts are now NLA like the injector with the timing wires built in.
It was std fit on disco 300 auto from (I think ) 95/6 onwards, bhp went from 111 to 120/122, which made sod all difference to the woeful std power delivery!

I had a plug in tuning box which was okay and adjustable but smoked, then went to jeremy fearn, which to be honest did not seem much different to the plug in chip, but on the trip home I could really feel the extra power/grunt.

Not true, my 90 300TDi (non-EDC) auto is very nippy at normal speeds and if I require a bit of extra oomph then the kick-down makes it set off like a good'un.

When new my 300TDi was fitted with an R380 & 1.2 transfer-box which was a perfect combination running on 265/75x16's. 12-Years later I decided to fit an Ashcroft 4HP22 conversion and on hearing differing comments about the gearing decided to leave it with the 1.2 and see how it worked. After living with it for 12-months I decided that it was definitely not quite right (a little late to change up for one thing) so swopped the transfer-box for a 1.4 and that has transformed it.
An excellent conversion and one that is very easy to live with. :D
