Hi to all i have just joined today.

I have a small or i think a big problem with my 04 discovery 2 td5 es premium . I have just done a service on her, when changing the centrafugal filter when i was putting the cover ( top) back on i got one of the bolts tight but the other just keeps spinning in the tread :( . I know the treads are stripped but is there any way around this with out changing the whole centraful housing as it looks a big job ? I thought maybe a helicoil would do the job ??? Any help !!

Many Thanks Ross

either a helicoil or i have seen people use lots of thread lock........

your other option is fill the hole with chemical metal, re-drill and tap the hole

HI G man.

Thanks for the help. I hope the helicoil works when i get one but the hole which has gone is right next to the air conditioning compressor and pipes, n/s of the disco and it maybe impossible to drill near them and tap out the hole for the helicoil. I will try to helicoil first though. If i cant helioil it i will try the lock tight. I have started up th engine and with one bolt tight and the other one nipped it does not leak as this cover i think  is just a splash cover all of the oil pressure goes into the filter and spins it. so maybe locktight will be ok. Is one bolt enough though and the other just nipped with lock tight. Is this good enough though for long term as i tour around portugal and spain alot ???

thanks Ross.

i cant see why it would be a problem, they are only little bolts anyway aren't they??? they don't hold in with much force? not really a td5 expert myself, i know more aboutthe older vehicles(series 3 owner)

HI

Yes they are only m6 bolts small ! I just wanted it to be pulled down a bit tighter thats all as i am worried it may leak oil later on maybe on a long trip  !! but i will go for the lock tight if the helicoil does not work. Would i be able to undo the bolt again with lock tight on it to change the filter in the future ?

Thanks Ross

Hi mate had the same problem as you all i done was drill a 8mm hole in the top part and cut a m8 thread in the bottom part of the filter housing so now you need to use a 13mm socket instead of a 10mm to undo it, it's a bit of a fiderly job but well worth it as a new filter housing is £110. hope this hepls.

Hi .

That is a good idea about removing the cover and drilling a 8mm hole in it, and tapping out the hole in the housing to m8 . Hopefully if i cant drill the hole out to 6.8mm in the housing due to lack of space it will be ok to put a tap straight in the hole already there, it is only alloy so it should not be a problem i think if i have to do this !!!
I could try a longer bolt before all this tapping out, and helicoiling etc, but not sure if the thread stops where it is now, but i will give it a go monday all of this when i have some tools. Really appricate all the help.
Is this a common problem with Td5, threads stripping on the centrafugal filter !!!

Many thanks Ross :) .

Hi.

Just thought i would let you know just if any of you have this problem with the centafugal threads stripping on disco 2 td5 in the future as i am sure you will.
I sorted it :D !!! Thank god. I used a helicoil. I removed the filter and cover again, removed the filter and stuffed rag inside and taped over the housing with masking take.
All i done was put a M6 Helicoil in the tread. It was easy as the tap with the helicoil set went straight into the hole so no drilling was required and the housing is alloy and it was very easy to tap out. I had not alot of room as the hole which went was the one near the turbo and air conditioning pipes but with a small 6inch shifter i done it. I then got a hoover and sucked out the pieces of metal out of the hole. Then as you all know i put the helicoil inside with the tool. Put the filter back in and the top cover back on, tightened the 2 m6 bolts JOB DONE. That saved me a new housing and alot of money at my local dealer hunters in norwich. It took me a max of 30 mintues ! Hope that helps if any body has this problem like me.

ROSS :D .
