Hi all, im a bit stuck right now.
Ive just replaced my fuel filter on my 1999 Td5 and it seems the self bleeding feature either isnt working or isnt fitted! It drove about 500 yards and conked out and now refusesd to start. Im guessing its air in the fuel system.
Ive tried the self bleed procedute and nothing happens.
Is there any other way of bleeding the fuel system?
Please help!!!

you should hear the pump running during bleeding procedure, if it aint running you cant bleed it

Ok but it's NEVER made any noise. I've posted about my silent fuel pump on here before as I thought it wasn't right that I couldn't hear it but it has been running up until changing the filter.
Is there another way if bleeding the system??

No way to bleed it now, once you've opened the system.

Why not check by disconnecting one of the pipes (perhaps one up at the regulator) and put ignition on. See if any fuel comes out.

Td5 pumps are a real mystery. I wouldn't be surprised to here this one never ran properly.

Called the AA. He thinks the pump is knackered, but why would just changing the filter cause that to fail?

it was probably knackered anyway and just changing the filter and then bleeding the system was the last straw.

Right, ok fuel pump it is then. Been looking through various forums about this fault and somewhere i read that some early TD5's didnt have this self bleed feature. (turn on ignition, pump throttle 5 times etc..) Is this the case? Since mine is a 1999 im guessing thats an 'early' in which case, how did you bleed the fuel on these early ones that didnt have the feature?

Mine is a 98 and it bled through even without using the old 5 stomps on the pedal trick because I never knew about it at the time. I just turned the ign on until the pump stopped running. Turned off then on again 2 or three times then kicked it in the guts. Job done. Make sure you only have one of the small O rings on the top of the filter as often they stick to the filter housing and you can end up with two or three which makes sealing a bit hit and miss.

Had a '99 TD5 Disco and the bleeding was done by the 5 stomp trick. Even if you cannot hear the pump, you should see the engine management light come on for a few seconds then go off and on again for the duration of the bleed cycle The pump should run every time the management light is on. (and you ought to hear it running)

when i tried the bleed process there was no engine management light either. i specifically looked for it as i had read about that on here too. Anyway, car is in the garage and they have replaced the pump and confirmed that it was kaputt. but he did say he had a big job getting all the air out of the system.
hopefully thats the end of it
