Hi All,

I've just posted a starting issue.....advice suggested camshaft sensor. Before I've had a chance to change that the car this morning won't start at all. Tunr the key and just get a repetitive clicking noise........no way near firing or turning the engine.
Now, I've put a charger on the battery BUT the green light in the battery indicates the battery is ok and the charger suggests the battery has a near full charge.
So, given the recent history what's the best thought on the problem?

Thanks..........so frustrating with problems coming thick and fast at the moment.

Was the battery...........jump leads to start and long drive and now on charger......not sure what drained it though...........thoughts??????????

Hi All,

Went to start the car this morning and just a short and slow turn and then nothing. Wouldn't start, not even getting the click noise. Checked the voltage and it read 12.2......I guess that's not enough to get it started? Is the battery draining or is it simply on it's way out?

Thanks for your input. Cheers

battery is knackered. replace and cure.

green light is pretty meaningless, likewise defective cell in the battery may still give correct resistance reading so charger indicates full charge, but in reality, battery is u/s.

would replace battery fifthwith. (like forthwith but faster)

optimus..........you were spot on! Took the battery to a specialist who diagnosed a split cell. Even when I'd fully recharged the battery the car wouldn't start and the charge was down o 10.5 volts.
New battery in and, so far, all's good.

I'm going to leave changing the camshaft sensor for now also as he said the battery is likley to've caused the issues that I thought may've been down to the sensor.
Thanks again.

Can you believe it!
Car now only starts now and again and we now have the engine management light, the amber one, coming on.
Will the camshaft sensor cause the amber warning light to come on?

Cheers

Seems to be the season for knackered TD4's :(

I feel your pain as mine is playing up too. It's going into the garage (if it starts) tomorrow for diagnostics. Hopefully something will show up.

Update time...........just had the RAC out to look at it. The guy plugged in his laptop and said he couldn't find anything wrong and diagnostic test said there was no problem.

Now.......would a camshaft sensor fault show up on diagnostics? Why are we now getting the amber warning light with the ! sign in it showing every nowand then? My wife says when that light comes on there is a SLIGHT loss of power but not significant.

My understanding (which is based on feedback here) is that the camshaft sensor is only relevant when starting, which suggests that it might not be the issue re the intermittent starting if we're also getting the warning light/dip in power.
Am I right in thinking this could be an injector issue?

Options as I see them - get LR to do a thorough diagnostic test and hope that shows up the issue, or replace the camshaft sensor and see if that is the cause, or look at the injectors (anyone have advice on how to do that?) and see if that's it.

Deeply frustrating - and obviously trying very hard to avoid handing over large wedges of cash to get a garage to sort it as money tight!!

Thanks in advance for looking and helping............cheers

hi I have had starting issues with my td4 and changed camshaft sensor starter motor still the same plays up everytime when it gets warm will start 1st time everytime but more I stop and start worse it gets. have just put it in garage and they said 1 of my injectors is not working right so getting it replaced approx. £380 quite an expense hope it is ok after this and no more go, good luck

Fingers crossed for you. Mine ended up being the fuel pressure sensor and injector No.2, £589 lighter when I left the garage but car running as it should :)

Thanks for the input. The car started ok today, works fine and has no issue.....which is odd........on further advice I'm changing fuel filter, adding some diesel cleaner and taking a look at the injectors........will report back if any force a cure.
Cheers
