Hi,Just started to hear a light rumbling/Dry noise at 30 mph and above from under the FL :( , I've had it to a couple of specialist.they both said the VCU is OK, one says it could be the IRD unit plus a wheel bearing.

It's going in on Thursday for a four wheel tracking and they say they will check the bearings and the oil level in the IRD.

If it is the IRD,will it still make the same noise if i take the prop off.

Has anyone had any symptoms like this.

If you take the prop off the noise should go away, but it all depends on what damage is done within the IRD.
Low oil levels in the diffs do cause them to be noisey.
 
Hi, I've had my FL 4 wheel tracked today and it was way out :( anyway they have lined it all up and my god what a difference to the drive :).

They have also checked the oil level in the IRD and diff, the oil level was OK in them both.

The rumbling is still there but not as bad as it was so i may take the rear prop off and see what that does.

A wheel bearing-like rumble can simply be uneven tyre wear, which is why there is a strict 6,000 mile rotation on the wheels.

If the rumble is from,say, the back , try swapping the tyres to the front to see if the noise migrates.

Hi, update to my rumbling noise problem, I have removed the rear prop and to be honest the noise was twice as bad :mad:, so off with the rest of the prop, then i went out on a test run "WHAT A DIFFERENCE"
no rumbling noise at all, the drive of the FL is so smooth it just feels like a different car altogether:D:D:D.

So I'm thinking that the bearings in the VC unit may need replacing but not too sure if i going to change them as i 'm so happy with the way it drives at the moment.

Individual has gone MONDO mode. That's what is called. Now, answer these questions, given that you've fixed your problem and reduced your fuel consumption.

Is your insurance still valid, considering you've modified your vehical?

Will it still pass an MOT?

Is it fair to have a Landrover that is front wheel drive only? You must think of your cars feelings too you know. :D:D:D

Seriously, do consider that you are still legal by leaving the prop off. I think the bearings are about £120 a set.

Good find by the way.
 
Hi, never looked at it that way :(, I just like the way it drives at the moment, but i must say i did buy it for the 4x4 for the winter time so i can use it to travel to work. may look like new bearing earlier than i thought :eek:

I suppose the only way to know is to ask, but then who wants the grief if they say you need some kind of engineers report.
Perhaps the same can be said for EGR mods or a simple lift kit or a change of dampers.

I bet the majority of Td4 owners don't notify there insurance about there Synergy 2s which in my view present a greater increase in risk.

Since I would never take ours off road I decided to try mondo mode and to be honest apart from some torque steer if you drive like a dick head it actually feels OK and the absence of that binding feeling is a pleasure. No wonder there are claims of increased fuel economy.
First sign of snow and it's going back on though.
 
Sounds like VCU support bearings to me. You can get a set from island 4x4 for about 35 quid. We supply new bearings in 2nd hand carriers for 20 quid.
 
Tell yah what. I was going round a busy road-a-bout this evening and this twonk in a Merc decided that he was going to fire on to the round-a-bout, right in front of me. What the hell he was thinking I was supposed to do I've no idea. Solution, right hand hard down and stand on the power as I had no chance of stopping. Hippo pulled sharply round, out of this lunatics way and shot in front of him. Too close..... If I'd been in Mondo mode I would have understeered / torque steered and probably hit him. (Then I would have really hit the tw@t). As it was I can go to full power and know the transmission can handle it, all be it with a few churps from the tyres.

Give me 4x4 any day!!

What the hell is it with dickhead commuters and the rush hour. They drive like complete psycos. Especially when they are in Audi's, Beamers or Merc's. I really hate driving with all this competitiveness and normally just let them go. I had no choice with this tw@t. :mad:
 
Hi, it;s funny you mention under steer,I've just been on a decent run in the Lander and found that it does under steer too much for my liking so I'm going to look into new bearings and get the prop back on
 
Whilst waiting for some parts, we had our L-series in Mondo mode for a few days. It was horrid, none of the assured handling I was used to (stiffer suspension and less roll than than our TD4 as it has different suspension) and lots of episodes of wheelspin, much more like the Honda CRV I used to have to drive at work. Couldn't wait for 4wd to be restored...

With regard to Darmain's question Yes it will pass an MOT with prop removed because mine has (and a few of my mates at different mot stations). With regard to insurance surely if the car has valid mot and classed as road worthy with prop removed then by definition it shouldn't be a problem? But only an insurance rep could give a definative answer and even then would probably try and worm out of it at 'claim time'.
And as daft as it sounds but insurance companies only ever ask if you have added to the vehicle (ie. alloys,bullbars) but never if you've taken anything off . And before i get slated yes it could be classed as a modification, but its just a point of view.

I hasten to point out that although I drive an audi i don't fit this stereotype ;)

With the freelander in mondo mode you obviously have to adapt your driving to the set up but it's no different to driving any of it's competitors that have switchable 4x4.
 
Granted my flailing generalisation that all drivers of Audi's, Beamers and Mercs drive like Nobheads is an unfair statement and I'm sure that there are a lot of good drivers, who don't draw attention to themselves by driving like the aforesaid Nobhead. It seems to me however, that the Nobheads generally drive Audi's, Beamers and Mercs (oh, and Silver goods vans) however, assuming that you ignore the Barries in their bucketed exhaust Saxo's, Golfs and Pug 106s, who drive like Nobheads but can't go fast enough and make too much noise with their exhausts and sub-woofers to not be noticed in time.
