might be quite a while before we get around to doing that, brother is considering selling as spares or repair, since it cost him £1600 to get it through M.O.T. last year and hasnt used it since.

Pots#43 Jack, but he's seen a bit of rocking movement on the pulleyCowl and fan off to get to crankshaft bolt
at least on my 4.0 ltr petrol i have an easily removable top section of the cowling the diesel does not .Cowl and fan off to get to crankshaft bolt

Well if the cooling water is in the engine pull the pipes off and lift the fan and cowl out together.not a lot to lose. But if at least one cylinder is full of water getting a socket on the crank bolt won't help.it has 2 water pipes one near each end of the radiator pointing towards the engine. there is no room to get the cowling up in between them.
At least you only have to take six injectors out.why are diesels so awkward to work on, on my petrol one this would be easy to do, just take the plugs out until you can turn the engine over?

Has the coolant level dropped in the expansion tank?
I guess that a 1/4" drop from max would be enough to cause the engine to hydraulic lock. I'm just a bit reluctant to believe that it's water in the cylinder, mine with a cracked head still turned over. Water sitting in the cylinder tends to creep past the rings and end up in the sump. Might be worth looking at the dipstick. As it's on a slope the level will not mean much but you may see evidence of water on the dipstick.we dont know. it is 1/4" below max, but he never looked at it when it came back from garage last year to see if it was full or not.
using tools i have never heard off
From top to bottom,27mm window double deep socket,to allow the wire on number 4 to clear,17mm pipe spanner and 17mm open ended.
The open ended spanner will do the job,I just included it for your information. pity your not closer.the only one i have got is the 17mm open ended spanner. i dont know if mechanic dave has the other two?
