Hi all
I have just replaced the cylinder head on my 300TDi and now when i turn the key all i get is a wooring noise what have i done help please!!
 
A what-ing noise ? I am in the throws of 300 cylinder head woes so dont think I am taking the **** - just dont understand ! Does starter motor engage,engine turn over,what ?
 
It sounds like a flat battery noise but I have put a new battery on it I have rocket it to make sure the starter is free and bleed the fuel so I am at a loss, we are going on holiday on saturday and need it.
 
Are yo getting the normal lights up? Tried locking and unlocking with the remote while sitting in,then key in and turn? Got a battery booster ? NEVER rely on a battery being good....gets me over and over.Have you got an extra earth from the block to the battery?That ups the cranking speed and power,you can put a bodge one in from the air con mount holes and see,the braid one at the starter is pretty wimpy.Was the engine turning over on the crankshaft by hand when you did the valve gaps ?
 
I didn't set the valve gaps the head was a recon one from turners with the valves in. It is like a flat battery sound, all the lights on the dash are as should be and it started fine before I did the work.
 
Have a look at my thread about not turning over.Try turning it by 27mm spanner/socket on the crankshaft nut.Mine wouldnt turn over and it was,presumably,a badly seated push rod.Yoy obviously put the rods in and bolted the rocker shaft down yourself,could happen then.Never happened to me before,but it did then.And you should set the valve gaps to match your engine/camshaft/sliders/pushrods etc,and only by turning the engine forwards,using the rule of nine that James Martin explained - the total of the valves being worked on is always 9.....
 
you have to reset tappets 8 thou feeler between valve and rocker number nine method wont work properly without

Right i have had the wife turn it over whilst i looked at what was going on,

Both the belts on the front are turning, i used a jump lead to run an earth directly from the battery to the starter and although there were sparks it made no differance.

I cracked the injectors and there is desiel there, i havent checked the valves yet, if the valves were incorrectly set would it not bang and crash... :confused::confused:
 
No, if it's a rebuild head they likely backed the adjusters off, some of them may not even be opening etc. Set your valve gaps and try again.
 
Mate,really....turn it over by hand.You wont do any damage that way and there is some chance of feeling whats going on.And take the rocker shaft off,seat the pushrods and do your valve gaps.And dont panic.
 
Before you set the clearences, turn the engine over a couple of times by hand

Check that all rockers are moving and then do the rule of 9 to set them

just to bed them in first as a fter rebuild they may not have seated
 
using 8 thou feeler guage between valve and rocker ,slacken all 13mm spanner size nuts other end of rocker and adjust till you can feel smooth sqeeze on feeler guage hold screw while locking up mark each rocker as done ,order is number nine which is wind engine over on crank nut 27mm clockwise as you look at it from front till one rocker pushes valve down to its max if you go past go on to next one etc 1 down adjust 8 ,2 down adjust 7 ,3 down adjust 6,4 down adjust 5,5 down adjust 4 ,6 down adjust 3 7 down adjust 2 ,8 down adjust 1 (numbers add up to nine)

Good advice but you surely you mean add up to 10? ;D
