Hello, i am 16 and i am going to be starting driving soon and would like a Land Rover :). I was just wondering, for insurance purposes, which Land Rover has the smallest engine. Also, if you know any Land Rovers that are known for having cheap insurance.

Thanks in advance.
Ej.

Me in a year. ;) ^

To be honest the engine size has nothing to do with Insurance costs at your age.

For instance my discovery 2.5 is way cheaper to insure than a 1.8 freelander.

But for the sake of answering your question you can get a series one with a 1.6 :D

Your probably best starting with a series 3 though, these are cheap on classic policies if you can get one.

A Series 2 or 3 would be your best bet, engines are 2.25 litre as standard. I've got my V8 on a limited mileage policy (3000 miles) and it only costs £140 a year and that's without any no claims.

Also take into account what you'll use it for - if you're going to be doing loads of miles then a 2.25 series will be expensive to run - converting it or buying a converted one with a 200tdi engine would be a better option and shouldn't have a massive impact on the insurance.

If you have a series you'll also need to be handy with tools.

Defenders are popular but expensive to insure as they get stolen a lot (i had one at 17 to learn to drive in and insurance wasn't bad with the NFU with my parents on the policy)

a classic policy wont touch a new driver at 17, most/all are min of 2 years and over 25 at least

Thanks guys. What about the Landrover Defender 90? Heard that was pretty good. And i would mostly just be using it to drive to college maybe and social events. No long journeys.

Hi Ej, welcome aboard!

Have you been in a Land Rover at all? They are quite their own special thing. As a teen I loved being a passenger, but looking back I do recall them as noisy and basic.

And then, as Dr Evil mentions, will it handle as easily as you expect?

Get a gaylander if you want light steering, get a 110 with no power steering if you want a challenge :p

Well my dad used to have an old 70's Series 2 Pickup which i drove a little, but it was not easy! But i loved the ruggedness and chunkyness of it all. And btw, i am on a bit of a budget. Maybe 2 grand at most.

for that money you'll be lucky to find a defender or S3 in any sort of condition to use, you might be best going for a straightish disco - thats if you can find anyone to insure you.

I learnt to drive in a 90 at about 14 and I still drive it at 17 but now every day. I love it, the insurance is about as cheap as you can get (if there is such a thing). I've done 300 mile trips in it and it drives you mad but you just have to accept it. A mate of mine had a series and I think that was a bit cheaper to insure. It's always nice to use my mums merc or my dads audi every once in a while for a bit of civilisation but I wouldn't swap my fender for the world.

Get yourself a defender 90 2.5td/2.5na can pick one up for 2k not a problem.
Drive it round until the engine goes pop then put a 200/300tdi in it's place any it will be perfect.
