Coming home from work tonight my Series III 2.25 petrol used all the water in the system and turned it into steam which it then gushed out the back of the engine, somewhere above the gearbox it seems. It took me half an hour to get it home but its here and still running ok hopefully.

Anybody got any ideas whwerwe the water/steam is coming from, if its head gasket or where I dont know.

Cant get under to have a look yet as its still too hot maybe in the morning Ill have time

Meanwhile I still gotta get to work tomorrow afternoon

Okay, time this morning to look at this prob, topped up rad and water flowed out through what I presume is the core plug. Got a nice little hole in it. (metal disc set into head right on the back of the engine) So now I think this is either engine out or head off, probably head off but what is head gasket like to do as have never had to do one before. Bit of a worrying prospect but will ring James Tennants 4x4 and see what he says.

Right Just spoken to James Tennants and he seems to think that the easiest way is to remove the head and drift in a new core plug that way. So off to work I go more later...... Never had a head off before so this should be interesting. 11.00am

Heads off and have had the core plug replaced as it had a 2 or 3 mm diameter hole, just wear and tare from age and the passing of water. £14.00 for head gasket and rocker cover gasket plus a few other bits so far not to bad. Start cleaning surfaces tomorrow and try to remember how to put it all back together.

Now have the head back on, in place at least but I'm not sure of the head bolts torque, is it 65 for the 19mm bolts or 75. Everything looks ok, no major scoring on either face so lets hope eh.
