Hello all - lurker coming on board!
A tricky question, which I appreciate is very subjective, but here goes.
Family of 4, who currently own an E Class Estate - and it's time for a change.
We live in London but head to the countryside frequently, for shooting and mountain biking. I want something that can carry bikes (towbar mount), cross streams on tracks, but probably not do hard core off road.
What are people's thoughts on relative off road capability, motorway driving and carrying capacity? Also relative running costs.
My wife has always wanted a RR, but I'm inclined to think that the Disco may be better for our current circumstances. However, I would like to accommodate her if possible (but also think maybe you get more for your money with the Disco)
Budget is up to £22k, so we hav:
a 2007 Range Rover 3.6 TDV8 HSE Auto Diesel for 21k with 54k miles on the clock, or
a 2077 Discovery 2.7 TD V6 HSE Auto Diesel for 21k with 37k on the clock
I appreciate that's lot of questions, but any help greatly appreciated.
 
Disco 3 is heavier and less luxury, MPG wise I would assume the RR would be slightly better due to lack of weight and although its a bigger engine it has less work to do. Personally I would go for the RR
 
a 2077 disco... hmmm i'd wouldn't go for that, bit of a wait :p would have to be the range rover for me too... dunno why in particular, it just would!
 
both will be perfectly capable off road. Disco 3 slightly edges but the rr wont leave ya wanting. D3 also has extra seats which may or may not be useful. See em both and decide which suits your needs best.Both good on road really compared to other LR products
 
I find the extra room in the disco is very handy, it's more like a van when you put the rear seats down.

Either are great tho.

Just down to which one you prefer the drive of, id look into costs aswell, insurance may be pretty different on them aswell as road tax? servicing costs and anything that typically goes wrong with them :)
 
For me it would be the Rangie, no hesitation.

A Disco is a family vehicle, and a bloody good one.

But a Rangie, well, it's a Range Rover. 'Nuff said! :D
 
A friend of ours had one of the first Disco 3's, HSE model, and chopped it in for a new Range Rover with all the whistles and bells on it. Has said he wishes he had kept the Disco. I have been in the back of the RR and felt quite claustrophobic with the bulky front seat headrests, but never had that feeling on the odd occasions I travelled in the back of my D3, when I had that. 7 seats also are very useful (even if you do sometimes become a bit of a taxi). Extortionate road tax on both vehicles post March 2006 though :(
 
It depends if you need a good family car - if so the Disco would be better with 7 seats although the RR would have more leg room. If you are planning to go off road I would probably say that the Disco is a little bit better but they are both awesome and if you are just going on the road then I think the range rover has slightly better fuel consumption... Hope this helps :)
