I fitted a new water pump to my '96 300 tdi this afternoon after a bearing collapse a leak and a belt shred : also fitted a new serpentine belt but now it keeps edging off the WP pulley by about two mil, just enough to sit on the flange of the pulley where it make a hell of a noise and it's likely to get shredded. I've tried and tried to get it back in line but after re-starting the engine it waits about five seconds before going off-line again. Could this be a problem with the water pump pulley, power steering pully or the tensioner. The tensioner seemed really taut to move and it was a real tight fit to get the belt back. Prior to this the tensioner was not such a tight fit. Grateful for any advice thanks.

look at the power steering pulley io had same issue and it was the end float in the power steering pump doing it

i hope not , it was a pig to do , could,nt get the viscose fan off .
pump as been working fine .

did it make the belt really tight to refit

how did you rectify it please.

anyone else have experince of this

cheers

i had to change power steering pump when its running stand at passenger side and watch the pulley see if its thrusting in and out

Sounds like something isnt alligned properly...did you use just a gasket on the wp or did you whack a load of sealant on too? The tensioner should be bloody tight, i had to use a bar to get the belt on properly.

lads thanks for the replies

heres where i,m at.

its all back together and running , i,ve just been outside and had another look while its ticking over.
the belt as it goes round the waterpump pulley is being pushed off the pulley to the right front edge .
its hanging over the edge of the pulley by about 3mm , and the harder you rev it the more it moves over and starts sqealing ( a right din )
then i turn the engine off worried that somethings gonna give.

it all looks in line on the other pulleys , but then again its only been on tickover.
i stood watching the power steering pump pulley while ticking over and to be honest it looks inline , i could,nt see it moving backwards or forwards.
i took the tension off the belt and tried to wobble it , but nothing obvious:confused2:
on assembly i used a new gasket and the blue sealant on the mating surfaces on the new water pump , i,ve really tighted all the bolts as much as i dare , pulleys on the right way round ( it says front on it ).

the belt was tough to get on , guessing i,ve got the right belt - its reads ERR5911 its a 1996 disco , had to use a blunt object to prise it on under the tensionor , but as been said it should be tough .

any more thoughts

thanks

300 tdis have 2 different size belts depending on the size of the pulley on the alternator they do a large pulley 1 and a small pulley 1

ERR5911 its a 1996MY disco belt from Vin TA. New belts are stiff and tight to fit, the correct way is to have the belt going around all the pullys then slide over the alternator pully while holding off the tension pully. Three hands required for that. :)

You should be able to cross referance the part number on the old belt, it's no good trying to match the length as the belt will stretch that's why LR recomend the replace ment every 5 years.

Can you post a few pics so we can see what you have explained, hopefully someone may see something that's not quite right.

lads - this is gonna sound strange , but as a last resort i thought i would try the "penny trick" and suprise suprise the belts have fallen back into line again.
so it means one of the pulleys must be out of line , but which one , could it be the tensioner itself all though all looks fine.

going to take it for a short drive and see what happens:cool:

Hi
Is your belt still ok?
Mine had a knackered water pump, changed that, but I`ve got through 3 belts now, ssem to d the same as yours was, stripping off the front edge of the belt.

been havin the same trouble, turns out there are alot of ****E tensioners out there that have a fault in the casting.... if you can get your hands on a DAYCO TENSIONER all should be well... ive been through 3 tensioners and now got the dayco one and it runs straight and true.

Abit concerned about you fella`s having to prise the belt on as i have never had this, if the belt is that tight that the tesioner cannot do its job one would assume you have the wrong belt.

Anyway go for a dayco tensioner and i wreckon you will be sorted
