Can anyone help? Just been out in my 02 D2 auto and when I selected reverse nothing happened. No R on the dash, the red lights beside the selector were not illuminated and no reverse gear! Help!!

To save money, you can adjust the xyz switch (it might be loose) or remove and fix/clean the insides of it yourself.

Could be worse. At least you can do a u turn in the road unlike all us with defender 110's who need a runway to manage a u'ey!!!

I’ll have a look at the fuses tomorrow but as the D and 3,2 & 1 gears work I’m thinking the fuses are fine.

Garage who knows what they are doing should take about 30 minutes, mine took 20 minutes but they have small hands and do them regularly.
Just for information, the park / neutral circuit uses an earth path to energize it so is not fused.
The reverse system takes its power supply from fuse 25 in the box under the steering wheel.

Thanks Roy. The only garage around here that has capacity to do it before I return to Saudi on Monday have never done them. I’ll cross my fingers.

If you want to understand what is involved in changing an xyz switch, search on line for and download as pdf

Workshop manual 1999 my on

Look in auto gearbox repair for switch - starter inhibitor as this is xyz switch.
In removal, if your hands are nimble enough you should be able to do it without removing exhaust pipe.

In the refit, as you will not have special tool, if the gear selector is in P, make sure the switch is also in P, as you will have to manually sync the two by turning on ignition and moving switch until P appears in dash display and red light illuminates by gear selector, and then run through the whole selector range making slight adjustments until they all sync.
If you search on hear there will be a better explanation on how to sync xyz switch

Just out of interest, if you put the truck in neutral and start it it then you can select reverse. The gearbox will be in limp mode thou
