Hi guys,

Just about to get my first land rover series 2 not had one before got myself a very early one too (1959 the 60th ever produced to be accurate) and wish to get it back to original with maybe an overdrive and free wheeling hubs as it is likely to be my only car.

The land rover in question is to be delivered in the next few weeks. If anyone has any suggestions about what to look for before parting with my money. Also would like to know how to find out if the engine and chassis are original ( I know the bulk head isn't).

Also would like to know what you all think the value is of this landy.

By just going from the pictures (not knowing anything else about it) I voted no - not for 4.5 grand.
 
Get the engine number and you can tell if it's in the right era.
Assuming it's a series 2 chassis, the rear check straps should be flat on the chassis and there should be no brace between bulkhead support and chassis rail.

If you're happy with a series 3 bulkhead (and why shouldn't you be) then why worry about the original engine. I wouldn't even worry about the chassis as long as it's not series 3.

Value of a scruffy non original bitsa? Not much.

Edit: just read the poll - 4.5 grand? Err, OK, if you say so.
 
I was thinking it was a bit high in price with the series 3 bulk head what sort of prices would you consider if it's all solid?

Both of those are cheaper than what you are considering in this thread.

Both of those look a lot better in the pictures to me.

But as always the only way to tell is to go and see them.

(I'm not recommending anything - just saying)
 
Ooo, ooo, get the v6 one. I like that.

The one you're looking at is nearly twice what it should be. And that assuming it's not a series 3 with early wings glued on.

Shouldn't be registered in 1959 with the vin ending 00060 unfortunately the v6 o won't be able to insure (18 yrs with one years n/c
 
Yep. Ill second that! Ford V6 is a better engine than landrover ever made. And the vehicle is better value.

Limited mileage classic insurance? Or buy the landy, stick it in a garage, and buy a Micra with the saving, drive it for a year, build up no claims?

Not 100% sure what you mean. The vin plate is easily replaced and means very little. Unless you find the number on the chassis (not easy at that age) or identify the chassis type than you can't be sure.
 
Just about everything about this vehicle says series 3 that has a 2a front grill and wings.
There is nothing I can see from 1959.
 
Series 3 parts I can see :- bulkhead, dash,heater box but no heater fan that I can see, instruments, steering wheel, door hinges, door mirrors and it looks like it's been roughly converted to a 2.5NA diesel defender engine. I bet it was a petrol to start with. Oh and the engine seems to be running the land rover total loss lube system. That vin plate makes me wonder because it looks like it has been etched rather than stamped. I would be concerned that it may not be what it says. Go and look but if the little voice in your head is shouting something isn't right then walk away. That one will cost a fortune to turn back, if it ever was, to a series 2a.

Vin number is on the drivers side dumb iron, if the dumb iron has been replaced and it almost certainly will have been then the vin will gone.

Think you're right abou the vin plate, it looks very new and appears to only held on by one screw.

No brake servo though, which is a (small) tick.
 
My first Land Rover was a petrol 109", from 1958, and the chassis number ended 00047. It had a few series 1 parts. I'm sure they built more than 13 in that year.
 
Yeah I have decided against buying this will have to keep my eye out for a series 2 preferably original with the lights on the inside ( only because I like them like this ).
If anyone has anything or knows where I can find one I am looking as close to Telford as possible but don't want to spend much (£3000 maybe higher for the right one)
