Hi there all

I'm hoping for some advice please. My '96 Disco has decided to play about with the tempreature reading!!!! It appears to reach normal operating temp. as normal then, after about 5 miles, it suddenly drops right down. I first noticed yesterday that the heater was blowing cold air. I stopped and checked visually but could see nothing amiss under the bonnet. Carried on my journey (extra carefully) and, within another few miles, normal temp. was resumed. It continued to fall and return again over the remainder of my journey. It continued the same on another trip later in the day.

Any thoughts gratefully received
many thanks

Weird, only thing I can think of that sounds logical is some sort of grot on the temp sender unit..?? or maybe a partial blockage slowing flow then moving and allowing it, or a wiring problem, check when it happens, over bumps etc...

Cant live with um wouldnt..!! live without um... DISCO'S

if your heater is blowing cold air...i know this is obvious but have you checked the water level?

It sounds like a water leak problem for heater to go cold check water pump gasket area and water pump housing gasket area any water rusty stains down right hand side of engine at front,if you find leak take off top small pipe to thermostat housing check to see if water comes out when engine running, make sure coolant topped up the temp sender normally goes up with no water at it but in colder temps could go down make sure the pipe you take off at thermostat is not blocked blow down it it should bubble in expansion tank if no flow take joiner out fom 3 way black connetor towards raidiator and clean out with drill bit hope this helps tiga.

Sorry to take so long to reply but had to go away unexpectedly! However I got the Disco to an independent Landrover specialist who was initially puzzled. He started by replacing the thermostat and, guess what, ...all was well. It appears that this was a one-off so I hope that this info. may be of use to others in the future.
Thanks for your help

I had the very same problem with mine. turned out to be a warped cylinder head. be very careful on long trips and keep an eye on temp gauge.
