Main bearing and subsequent broken crankshaft is a common problem on TDV6's :(

Some of the engines are developing a fault causing damage to the engine. This 2.7 turbo-diesel TDV6 engine is suffering from wear of big end bearings, those are sticking to the crankshaft and causing the engine to seize. The pressure on the crankshaft is so big that the crankshaft can snap. This is causing even more extensive damage in the engine block. The snapped crank usually still has enough torque to damage main bearing caps.
This unlikely situation is the most extreme as both the crankshaft and engine block are not serviceable which leads to an increased price to repair the engine.
In most situations engine problems are solved by grinding of crankshaft and installing of oversized bearings.
Another possible damage of the engine are scored cylinder liners and bent con rods, this damage to the engine is happening as result of turbo charger fault. Leak of oil from turbo charger to the inlet, build up of oil level in the inter cooler and finally surge of oil to the engine makes the connection rods bend ( similar way as when flooded by water - engine is getting hydrolocked ). The usual symptom of this is misfiring on one or more cylinders. Bent con rods also cause the pistons to score the cylinder liners. In such cases the pistons along with piston rings, the liners and the connection rods must be replaced.
Beware of the cheap chinese manufactured TDV6 crankshafts from ebay.

Just a thought try CWS (colin white serv) There are in Somerset and i think the web sit is www.cws4x4.co.uk
Hope it helps

Are you full comp insurance. I have heard of these kind of things being claimed for on insurance.
Not a lot of people do it because most wouldn't think its covered but might be worth checking out.

Good old ford crap engines same in transit and ranger there engines are rubbish old land rover engines from 80s and 90s best 200 /300 TDI before ecus etc

maybe cos its a Ford lump?
Yes MHM, the way things are in the motoring world these days it's hard to point the finger and know exactly who owns what and who is supplying what from where, but breaking crankshafts in relatively expensive vehicles....... really, no wonder why vehicles depreciate so quickly today. The last crank I broke was in my old Austin A40 in 1966, but then some might say, that I have not tried hard enough!

I am actually going to ring landrover direct as I've been told by 4 garages now it a common problem and caused by a bad design .. very expensive dog kennel at the moment .. The dog thinks it's fun to hide in

Haha.. i am patiently awaiting a reply not holding my breath.. I also have 2 garages looking for the best quotes for me.. its going to be a costly job.. then sadly think I will be selling it as no one will warranty the work past 6 months

Sorry to hear of your unfortunate situation. I did go through a phase of thinking about a D3 for the added comfort. Glad I decided to tidy up my 200 tdi Defender instead.

Yeah don't have one.. its amazing how many have the same issue at similar mileage
Been told the disco 4 doesn't have the same issues though

I can see that mechanical breakdown insurance (ie a warranty) would cover it but how would normal fully comp insurance cover a breakdown?

I think because it has in all effect written off the car.. I haven't rand the insurance as 9 years no claims is a lot to lose :/

Do you think a disco 4 engine would go in it.. just thinking if it's a known fault with the disco 3 but not the 4 if this would be a better fix.. but I have no idea where to start

They are seriously expensive to run as well, though!

When you are in a hole, stop digging! ;)

Nice D2, £1500 quid, run it a few years, if it gets an expensive fault, get it up the scrappies. Most things can be fixed for a k anyway! ;)

Or an old Fender, spend 6-7k, get a real good one, drive it the rest of your life for a few hundred a year plus legalities! :)

They are very expensive.. that wasn't a problem till Tuesday though haha.. road tax I think is bad at 480 quid new clutch last year at 1000 serviced every year without fail new filters oil you name it.. still broken :/
