Hi can anyone help.. We have a landrover discovery 3.. 58 plate and the crank shaft has gone. I'm sat in the car waiting for recovery after having the shock of my life when I asked hunters landrover for a quote to fix it
Any help you can offer on where to buy a new engine or reconditioned and also best place to get it fitted.. I'm in Derbyshire

Thats better, but still might not get much attention.
Lets see if @blue beasty reckons it might deserve to go in somewhere more prominent. Sounds like you have a serious issue. Dont get your hopes up too much, not heard D3 are cheap to fix.

I'm not expecting cheap.. but hopefully less than the 14 grand hunters just quoted me.. :) always thought discos were indestructible. . Turns out this one isn't lol

I dont have any experience of D3 myself, I mainly like old stuff, though I do have a D2 for towing. I have had landrovers for 30 years, not met any that were indestrucitble yet! ;) :D

Ther are a few D3s on the forum, though, and if you keep and eye, you will hopefully get some suggestions in a bit. I have alerted admin, and they may decide to move your fred somewhere more visible. Best of luck, as I said, I have heard horror stories about parts prices, but hope you can improve on 14k to deal!

Quite frankly, for 14 grand, you could get yourself another D3 (engine and body), a fairly reasonable one too.

You know that's exactly what I said to the guy on the phone.. I did check to see he he was kidding but sadly he wasn't and didn't take kindly to me laughing at him and telling him it was more than the car was worth. I'm just trying to find a solution I know it's going to be a recon engine job but just wondered if there was any one on here that knew who to go to local ish that won't try ripping me off

Just out of interest, how do you know the crank is at fault?

A man in a dodgy garage told us that's what it was and it needed a new engine.. He quoted 7 grand.. hunters 14 grand.. I don't have that kind of spare cash just sitting around so had to try get it home to work out what to do.. The nice rac man dropped it back on my drive
So unless the rac and the dodgy man on the garage were both wrong then that's what it is.. It no longer starts

What are the symptoms of the failed crank?

It's symptoms yesterday were a loud knocking from the bottom of the engine.. loss of power and finally the oil light came one and the engine stopped working.. I'm only going on what I've been told and it need's a new engine..

Can you explain what happened, were you driving along and heard a hell of a clatter from the engine or something like that.

Might be worth getting a second opinion? If you find somewhere reliable for the second opinion, they might be able to install the recon if it is needed too.

I can't move the car to get a second opinion .. It won't even turn over

Get them to come and look at it. :)

I donnt know these engines at all, but a crank failure shouldnt stop it turning over. Seizure might, wondering if the oil pump has packed in?
