My new to me 1999 Defender 300TDi manual van is making a very nasty noise from I think the transfer box.

I've had it about a month and in that time there's been a very intermittent screeching noise, only lasts a second. Sounds like gearbox area? I have replaced the front propshaft front UJ and thats all I've done to it.

Today driving along at 60mph the screeching noise appears and this it doesn't stop. Being an ex two stroke racer I jumped on the clutch, made not difference, could definitely feel something seizing up, didn't lock though.
I pulled over and looked underneath, all the familiar oil leeks but propshafts where their supposed to be etc.
Messed about with Hi Lo and difflock all drives.
I got up the courage to limp home and the noise sounds like a seized/damaged bearing, dip the clutch put it in neutral and noise still the same.
I got it home and had look again underneath. Back prop had normal smooth backlash, but the front prop had notchy/stiffness in the backlash.
I haven't had time to jack it or get the front prop off yet. I did feel both UJ's on the front prop, neither were hot.

One other thing I did was put the Hi/Lo box into neutral and with the engine running went through all the gears, no sound at all. So I think I can say the gearbox is not the problem, must be transfer box/propshafts/axles etc.

So I think it's a bearing in the transfer box. If it's an output shaft bearing can I do this without taking the while gearbox out??

Many thanks

Matt

Perfect thanks, that takes all the thinking and questions out of changing the T/B front output shaft bearing.

I'm pretty sure/hoping thats the bearing which has seized.

Thanks
Matt

Have ya checked your wheel bearings (1 May be dry) did ya feel your hubs when you pulled over (Was one alot hoter than the rest?)

Jack each wheel up one by one and check for play in the 6-12 movement......

May not highlight a dry hub bearing though i spose, worth a try mate :)

Haven't checked the wheel bearings, but they're definitely worth checking.

busterbus, from your photo's you've obviously done the T/B front bearing, were you doing an overhaul or had it failed. What noise did make if it failed?

Thanks

Matt

front bearing normally has excessive play in it, which is why it needs replacement, have you checked or changed the oil content of the transfer box?

Still not found the problem, but getting closer.

Drained transfer box, fine swarf on drain plug, no chunks-big bits.

Removed front prop, newly replaced UJ fine and the other UJ also fine.

Drained front diff, fine swarf as transfer box.

Rotate the input flange on front diff very notchy-knacker bearing feel.

Front wheel bearings feel fine, no play.

Wheels off spinning either hub or input flange the notchy-knacker bearing feel is the same on all three.

Next thing to do is remove the diff to see if thats the problem. What the tried and tested method for this?

Matt

No it's definitely a 300TDi, it was registered new in April 1999, so one of the final ones made in 1998!. I don't when that stopped final production exactly in 1998, may even have been early 1999when they stopped producing them?
