Hi folks. Need some help with trying to get my 1975 Series III going again. It was running a few months ago after I fitted some new plugs/battery, serviced the fuel pump and fitted a new ignition coil. Unfortunately it was left alone again for a while and then wouldn’t start again. Checked everything but I may have wire up the ignition coil/battery wrongly and the top of the distributor started smoking. Opened that up and bits appeared to be burnt out and very old, so I bought a new one and fitted that. Now I think the timing is out and it wont start. I have tried to start it and twist the distributor but still no luck. Cleaned all the plugs and they all appear to spark after testing them. Not sure my next move. Have tried YouTube videos and my manual but seem to be stuck. I’m hoping that all your mechanical experiences can point me in the right direction.


PS I can post picks if that will help.
 
Well, you could just try removing it, turning it 180 degrees and then putting it back. When it stops raining I'll go out and look at mine to see where number one lead from the cap points.

Right, good idea. Told you I was useless lol. Yeah the rain is a pain, trying to build a carport at the mo so I can work in all weathers... will make life easier hopefully. :)

On my 2A, #1 points at#1 cylinder, dunno if they changed that on the 3, unlikely
Need to check the rotor arm is pointing to the front when #1 piston is at tdc with both valves closed, ie on the compression stroke

Smoking distributor suggests shorting. Double check how the points are installed. It’s quite easy to get it wrong. Ensure that the retaining lug is insulated and not shorting; it needs to have the nylon insulation in the correct place.
