Aw that is off putting, both the ones I am looking at look very well kept, I have the fear of massive repair bills and problems though like you did, would you avoid them all together and go for something else? I have no experience with them so know nothing about them

chassis rust,chassis rust and more chassis rust.oh did i mention.chassis rust.;)

the cracked heads were on the earlier 10p engines, i believe that they changed to the 15p around 2000ish, the 15p resolved the cracked head issues. we have a commercial discovery 2 at work, personally i like it, its got a fair amount of poke but unfotunately it has the 3 amigos at the moment, only criticism is that it lags a bit until the turbo kicks in but apart from that its a nice vehicle but i prefer to be in my fender

Having owned a D1, D2 and D3 (as well as a defender and a series and driven several F2's) ahem, I would strongly recommend NOT getting a D2. A good quality 300tdi D1, yes. A lower spec early D3, (or better if money allows) yes. but not the D2. I would even recommend a F2 (not a F1 though) if you didn't need it for heavy towing and serious off-roading, but, just not a D2!
