Also new at same time as cap and leads. But a possible. It started and ran fine just before i started work in it. Only ignition parts removed were the cap with all the leads still attached.

I'm thinking the contact in the cap from king lead to arm maybe?

Landrover V8's do not like pattern ignition parts fitted a pattern distributor
cap it was bloody nightmere threw it in the skip after a couple of days,it looked fine fitted a lucas cap and the car started and ran fine.

Hoping your right boycie! First thing im going to after work tomorrow is re-fit an genuine cap.

At least people are thinking along te same lines here!

UPdate. It's got spark and probably did all along but it still won't f-ing start. Doesn't even catch or backfire or anything, just cranks. You can smell fuel and the plugs get wet after a while. Tried a set of new plugs and still nothing.

I'm thinking but i hope it's not now going to be down to poor compression. Don't have a tester at hand but it seems to have good compression just by the feel of resistance while turning it by hand.

If you take the plugs out one at a time reconnect the lead hold the
body of the plug (metal part) against a good earth ie engine and get
somebody to crank the engine do you get a good spark ?.

I've had a situation like this.

Seems to be flooded actually.

If you think the timing is right, tow start it and hope.

If you're not sure, plugs out, pump fuse out and crank. Then plugs back in and crank, then hit pump fuse whilst cranking.

Get a man to crank whilst you move dizzy back and forth to find a sweet spot where it will start to catch and eventually fire and run.

I've had this a couple of times after playing with ignition etc.

I've also had the timing go way out for no reason, repeated cranking flooded the **** out of it, and I got it running by the above method after finally deciding what the prob might be.

Hth :)

I'd agree it does seemed flooded I can't tow it as its an auto. I did try the plugs out and cranking but I'll try again tonight. I'll heat up the plugs before I re fit them. How long did you crank it with the plugs out?

Yep. Getting a nice blue arc. Whether or not it can do that while being under compression is another thing

I had several strange episodes were my V8 just turns over will not fire, switch it off lift the bonnet try again and it starts and runs fine. It
happened about 6 times last year dont bother with the bonnet now switch it off for a couple of mins try it again then it starts and runs fine.
I am in the middle of fitting a Mega jolt ignition system so that I can get rid of the coil ,distributor , and wiring . The car sould be able to run under water not bad for a petrol.

What sort of cost megajolt vs. the full hit megasquirt?

I have always looked at megasquirt because I think it will be more economical than 14cux injection. However that 14cux seems bloody reliable!

What's the best website to do my reading?

Cheers :)

Around 30 seconds or so. As long as you can smell fuel coming out of the plug holes. Refit hot plugs and leave fuel pump fuse out, and squirt carb cleaner into intake, see if it will fire up on that.

Then try petrol again and hope for the best, with dizzy rotation if you're not confident your timing is right.

You'll get it eventually don't worry.

Connect a big battery charger or constantly jump from another running vehicle, to keep your system voltages nice and high :)

30 seconds... I was doing about 5 with the plugs out, didn't want to burn out the starter!!

Also looked into mega squirt but I've been upto the windscreen in water with just the use of silicone on ignition parts!!

I am just fitting the Jolt at the moment see how that goes if its reliable
MIGHT convert to Mega squirt.I love the V8 only use the disco to
cart my Douge de Bordeuex's about during the week ,weekends a bit of green laning and hopefully offroading ,a tank full of petrol lasts over 1
month.

Yeah it's running but I've got the same f-ing not revving past 3000rpm problem. I've lost all interest in it now this has been going on for months.

You've obviously got a hardware problem.

Check the resistor that links the ecu to the ignition system.

Already change that. Also checked the resistance at the ecu back to the coil just incase it was a trapped wire and all is well. No codes on fault code reader either

Well, that is indeed annoying.

It runs perfectly but won't pull past 3000 rpm? Will it redline in neutral or not at all?

Will it climb to the redline at WOT in neutral as it should, or does it struggle even in neutral to get past 3k?

Needs fuel, spark and air, all at the correct time.

What have you NOT replaced/checked?
