Hi all - i posted a similar thread on the 90 site about a year ago with no success so i thought i would try here! I have a 200tdi engine with 150k on the clock. When hot, i have about 8psi at tickover which puts the warning light on when the engine is loaded. At 1500 rpm i have 40psi.
I have replaced main and big end shells (the originals were unworn!). I checked the oil pump and found it to be within tolerance.
I think the engine sounds a bit "cammy!"
Anyone have similar experience and can point me in the right direction?

thanks
steve

I'm not familiar with the Tdi engine but a quick look in the RRC manual shows a pressure relief valve on the Tdi that is almost identical to that on the V8's. Suggest you replace the pressure relief valve and spring and then check the pump gears for wear. That will mean taking the sump off I'm afraid. At least you will also be able to make sure the pick up is clean and clear.

If you take that route, you will need to jack the chassis then support on suitable axle stands to give you clearance over the front axle so you can easily drop the sump - remember to remove the dip stick before taking the sump off, it makes it easier, honest;)

as one of ya cam bearings slipped? that can cause low pressure till ya pick your revs up,came across it years ago took some finding out thou:eek:

When you say 'loaded' can I assume the engine is idling and you have selected a gear and are lifting the clutch to slow the engine? And then the oil light comes on?

I have a 200 tdi 190 km on the clock and the oil pressure at idle is barely 1 bar (12 psi) and at 1500 rpm is 2.5 bar which is about 36 psi. At a little under 3000 rpm the oil pressure is 3 bar which is not much over 40 psi, all readings when hot. When cold the readings never go over 4 bar.

This has been the same since I bought the car 2 years ago and I have travelled about 40,000 km's like this with no apparent problems, i.e. no smoking/knocking ect. Is 40 psi at revs a low figure, perhaps someone can enlighten us further?

I am sure the figure is in the paynes manual somewhere.

regards

Dave

Dave - yes spot on - also when rumbling along in 2nd low at no revs the light is then on constantly. - I would be happy with 12psi at tickover.

Oil dripper - i think you are on the right lines - does this mean an engine out and re sleeve the block?

thanks both

steve
