My mate bought a 90 off roader arb lockers ect ect, not knowing much about what he bought, the rear diff developed some play in the in put so he took it to the local 4x4 place who sell assorted off offloading gear,

He has since given me a list of everything on his Landy, the bit that's important I'd I noticed it said heavy duty crown and pinion and ratios altered,

I then rembered him calling me asking for a diff that this place wanted to build his locker back in to, the wanted over £100 for a used diff with no warrenty, as te shop was adiment that it was a standard 24 spline diff crown and pinion.

I was round at his tonight and said is that the diff that broke, yes he replied,

I grabbed the crown wheel and said that's not normal there's not enough teeth, and there deeper just more chunkey,

Tool it home and but it next to a standard 300tdi diff I have and there less teeth on my mates than mine the crown wheel is just thicker in general and I cleaned it up and found 186 scribed in to it and it says, ash 37-? Carnt rember now,

Am I right in thinking this is a lower ratio hd crown and pinion from Ashcroft?

Cheers

count pinion teeth and cw teeth ,3.54 std def /disco are 13 pinion and 47 cw ,4.1 was popular for big tyres as is 1/2 way between series 4.7 and 3.54 ,

Just spoke to ash croft who say it is one of the 4.11 crown wheels,

So am I right in thinking if the front has still got a 4.11 in and the rear now has a standard 3.54 this wont be doing the transfer box any favours?

Easy way to check the front jack up one front wheel and pace a mark at the bottom of tire and the mark the input UJ to the diff now rotate the tire one turn and count how many times the UJ goes round it's only a appox setting but will give you a good idea of the ratio

Yes and a weaker back diff. Could he not get the original diff fixed?

Also could cause some issues when center difflock is engaged?

they said the diff was beond repair. its not it just needs a good clean, and the input bearings replacing, which apparently they did to the second hand one he took them,

he told them about the diffrent ratio and they said it wasnt, i rang up on his behalf and said it has ashcroft hd crown ect he said and i quote, i have it here in front of me it is a standard crown whell ect and not an ashcroft one,

i told my mate to get his old bit back as i wanted to see them.

for anyone in leeds this is 4 plus four at sheepscar.

he has rung them today and they have laffed at him and said its bull**** there was nothing diffrent and the vibration he has whislt drivibg now is somthing eles, he struggles off road even with arb's as im gessing it only the rear wheels that are driving. and when he has had his diff lock in its very had to relese it even with reversing, and he said hes got a whining noise now from somthing.
