Thanks juergen, i will have a look tomorrow if i have time. I think that my car has more then one issue so hopefully it is something relatively simple to at least get some power and speed back, fingers crossed!

i think you hoping it's got something simple now wrong with it - if he's just replaced your knackered pistons with 4 used ones (and done nothing else) there's a good chance he's wasted his time and your money

ask for the bill and make sure it's itemised - it should include new rings and a hone at the very least

......... who else has work done on their vehicle without first agreeing the price ?

Can't actually believe it!!! Just got bill from the person who carried out the work today on my engine. The bill came to £845+vat!!!!!!!!! When i took my landy to him i was told i had two options to get it running well again... either spend about £300 re doing pistons and stuff. or spend a grand and get 200tdi and new clutch put in (including labour.) so at the time went for the cheaper option. I can't believe the price im expected to pay now! i could have got a 200tdi, gearbox, and clutch for that!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

ooo and to top it off, my car has gone back to not working correctly, which is why i started this thread in the first place!

Looks like you went for option 3. Fook the landy up worse and blag the customer.:(

I would take my landy elsewhere and get a decent mechanic to fit a 200tdi with the money. If they ask for payment tell em to whistle for it and then contact trading standards.

I meant the bill is from before Christmas when he carried out the piston work, i haven't been back to him since then. I have been saving my pennies to get a 200tdi then fit over the summer, but a bill of £900 is a major kick in the nuts!!

Tell him he aint fit to work on the vehicle and he aint getting paid EVER, more like.
yer tht sounds like a gd plan. especially as he seems dodgy! remember the rear heated windscreen wher one of his mechanics told u sumthin totally different 2 what he had sed??

I agree with Ratty.

First, do NOT hand the car over to that garage, or they will seize it. If they demand the car, say you have no confidence in their ability, and NO.

Second, inform them that the work they did has turned out to be defective, and the car is WORSE now than it was before they worked on it. Also tell them you are NOT prepared to let them have the car again, but you are considering getting an independent examination to assess the damage, after which you will be expecting them to pay to have the car sorted properly.

Third, and this is very important, remind them that a rate for the job WAS discussed and £300 was the figure. Tell them that if they harrass you for payment of their bill before the engine is rectified, that you will pay the sum of £300 into the County Court, thus showing you willing to pay a REASONABLE amount (as discussed) but only AFTER the engine is fixed, and that of course all futther work will be at their cost.

At £800+ and a jiggered engine it may be a lawyer job. With any luck they might write the bill off, and forget it. Then you fit what you should have fitted first time!

my advise would be to take it to a competing local garage, explain the situation and ask for a (it wont be) independent evaluation of the works done and what now needs to be done, including costs, to rectify the issue - that might cost you a couple of 100 quid

give the iffy garage a view of the report, telling them that it's going to form part of your loss and expense claim against them

don't let them near your vehicle

Thanks CharlesY and Sean, useful advice which i will definitely follow.

one last point, if you are planning to claim dont let anyone do any work on the vehicle untill a resolution is agread or the iffy garage could counter saying that it's been abused or modified after their works were accepted

I agree, and I hope that you never agreed in writing to anything. In relation to an independant report some garages might not want to get involved, but the RAC or AA will give you a report for about 100 quid. A compression check and an inspection with the inspector possibly getting access to a copy of the worksheets and recipts, all required. But the bottom line is that the work has to be to a reasonable standard, and it aint is it.

I think your first port of call is to tell them they aint getting paid and see what they do. Verbal tho at this minute.
