hiya after following our fellow member and friend datateks idoits guide to airbag change a couple of weeks ago i,m in the process of doing my other front airbag, everything was going sweet till it came to removing the bottom pin,its bent all over the place:(i,ve twisted, got a chisel on it,pulled the f**ker with a pair of mole grips on it and now through fear of it snapping:eek:i,ve called it a day.any advice greatly, greatly appreciated cheers craig

Hi Craig,

I had the same problem with my rear bags. I found the best option I had was plenty or releasing fluid around the pin. (They did break and I used molegrips) then keep wiggling / rotating and pulling until it finally came out. When I put new ones in I copperslipped them, unbelievably the front ones came out easily but I still copperslipped them when I put them in.

It may be easier if you put it on stands and remove the wheel.

cheers mate, been doin a little reading and it seems i,ve got the early ally bodied bags at the front, well 1 is the other is a new plastic one,the pin on the other came out fairly easy but this just does,nt want to move.from my search it looks like i,m not the only one to have had the prob but been back at work thurs i,m not sure i want to spend my last day off p**sing about under a car.

Plenty of decent penetrating fluid matey. Not WD40 but a proper removal fluid. It takes some patience but eventually it gives and moves. I clamped onto the main pin that goes through the bag base and just kept soking it and wiggling it. Took about 45 minutes but it sorted. Why not soak it and leave overnight? Fresh start in the morning may see it come out!;)

good thinking batman.:)

I presume your talking about the retaining pin. I had the same problem with mine. I just used a cold chisel right against where it comes out of the base of the airbag and chopped it off both sides.
The front ones are a bit more awkward, I had to undo the bottom of the shock absorber to get access before I could chop the pins off.

45 mins of freeing up the pins!! Sod that Chop them off and replace with new ones 45 seconds with a decent chisel & Hammer.

Would have loved to but couldn't get near the rear ones with a chisel as they were at the top and really tight between the chassis and the body.

Still, got there in the end:D

yes mate the dreaded RETAINING PIN,spent 2 hours trying to pull the barsteward out, looks like its an hammer and chisel jobby, did your airbag pop out after snapping the pins off?
